Prion: Hey Blizzard can I play Diablo III?

Blizzard: You will need to pay me $60.

Prion: Okay, sounds reasonable.

Blizzard: You will need to have a computer capable of running the game.

Prion: Okay, that makes sense.

Blizzard: You will need a working internet connection whenever you want to play.

Prion: Seems a little harsh but okay, my connection is pretty stable.

So blizzard can I play Diablo III?

Blizzard: No.

A new night, a new error message.

This time it's Error 24100 or something... servers are full. I was swapping items between characters so not being able to finish off the swapping really sucked.

I was in the last stages of Act 4 when I got a "Server will disconnect in 30 mins".

Started the Diablo fight with at around "Server will disconnect in 21 minutes" message.

Thankfully I finished the game with around 10 minutes to go. I would of been PISSED if I got disconnected mid-boss fight.

Has Blizzard ever made a comment as to why they won't set up an Oceania server? Maybe there weren't enough WoW players to justify the cost, but with Wow and Diablo 3 screaming out for a local server, Blizzard really need to pull their finger out.

No real comment has been made. Lots of speculation about not being able to get along with the local telcos.

Bit late for them to consider an Oceania server now isn't it? It would be a hell of a lot of profiles/characters to port over... OK, so it could be just a copy over so as to not risk deleting the characters all together if the port f's up.

Last week the server reset 3 times when I was fighting Diablo, down to 10% each attempt. =(

12 Years of online gaming and one would think that Blizzard would do maintenance for WoW on Tuesday's (normal time which is fine...) and Diablo on either a Monday or a Wednesday to have less impact on their clients?

They did, just didn't do enough.

Video gaming giant Blizzard Entertainment has reportedly labelled Telstra as the biggest roadblock in its way to setting up dedicated Australian servers for its popular World of Warcraft and StarCraft II games.

National broadband player Internode has discussed the need for an Australian World of Warcraft server with iconic game publisher Blizzard “for many years”, the company’s managing director Simon Hackett said in April. However the talks have gotten nowhere.

It's old but it shows that Blizzard has tried. Perhaps if other ISP's came to the table maybe something could be done? :)

I think you might have misread that (plus Delimiter misreported the story): Blizzard wasn't referring to Telstra, they considered Optus our "number one ISP" (which is funny in and of itself).

Blizzard's plan was to put the Oceanic servers in Singapore, which is hardly "local" IMO. More info here: http://www.ausgamers.com/news/read/2974876 (which is where Delimiter was quoting from).

IIRC, Internode actually approached Blizzard with an offer to host "real" local servers years ago, but were rebuffed (if Matt Lyons/Acaila were still around he might be able to provide more detail).

Most likely, haven't had enough coffee yet. Sad face still =(

Update: Turns out Brack was referring to Optus as our "number one ISP" which means his comments about San Diego now make sense, but it also means they need to be informed a little more about the actual ISP situation in Australia, because Optus would really only represent a small part of our overall service.

Wonder if Blizzard just googled aussie ISP's and Optus was the first one on the results list? Surely they would of done some sort of research on what the internet capabilities in Australia were like =\

I would guess that there is a lot of shared infrastructure between the two games. Definitely authentication and other account management, maybe even chat, auction house and database clusters. We would need to know more about their infrastructure to know if that was feasible.
