Anywhere on the coast is just full of thugs. Not really Bandits who are somewhat equipped and actually hunting people. Even I am only living day to day, just using people as another loot source.

Small amount of servers? There is 8 Australian ones alone, then all the American ones, NZ and Thailand (Which is buggy). You don't get that well known as a bandit if you're spread over twenty something servers.

Only seem to find friendly people. Been shot at once and even then I killed him first. I don't really stay on the coast though so maybe that's it.

My first few days I didn't encounter a single bandit. Then had a wave of bad encounters. It's just luck who you run into. One day someone sneaks up on you but asks to join instead of firing, the next you're asking for permission to leave an area while pinned down by three snipers (my weekend of DayZ...).

Will be attempting node servers, but I feel (from twitter comments) that I may be living over on NZ servers. We'll see.

We should put together a GoN posse

IMO you guys are dreaming if you think inland is more friendly, you'll run into less people as you start moving that way but the further north you go the more likely people are you rip you up without hesitation, the increased gear level means you just have so much more to lose.

Most servers make it impossible to track anyone due to not being able to see their name until you've shot them, there are no punishment skins any more either so you can't tell that way. Good luck tracking anyone unless they make a lot of mistakes, it can happen though if you're a bit lucky.

I need to start recording games, got myself killed last night while navigating to a friend, ended up fighting 3 guys and grass in my scope got me killed (my own fault), action then went as follows:

* spawn at electro (died in the forest behind the eastern sheds at balota)
* ****/cry on ts for the 5-10 minutes it takes me to overland nav west with using the sun/landmarks
* scavenge an Enfield + 2 clips omw through a barn
* listen to friend **** on ts as the same group kills him after he tries to salvage my gear but they're still divvying it up
* cry some more
* pick up their trail because they're traveling too close together
* get behind
* engage with the righteous fist of an angry god (SMLE) at 200 yards
* first shot takes the guy with the best cammo between the shoulders and hammers him down
* they panic and break left seeking the berm and real cover
* second shot takes their sniper in the neck and he goes down spurting
* duck behind a tree to deal with the 9 zombies my SMLE attracted
* 300m flanking maneuver to the north
* headshot the last guy at 100 yards, he's still watching where I fought the zombies

LOVE me that Enfield, if it was just a teensy bit quieter it would be the best weapon in the game, it's an absolute tack driver out to 300+ yards and still maintains enough energy to drop someone with 1 shot center mass, 3 shots for 3 kills and i managed to get back my gear AND gear up my partner before hiding their bodies. They thought I had a DMR :biggrin(1):

Way I see it, on the coast you get fresh survivors who are useless to seasoned bandits or other survivors. They have no equipment, they tend to freak out and they can't be trusted. Along with them you find Thugs, basically bandits who just want to Makarov people for a can of beans, then die themselves.

As you move inland, everyone starts to get more equipped. You'll find bands of Survivors and Bandits working together, all reasonably armed and all much better at thinking their way through problems, be that problem a zombie or how to take someone elses gun. You'll also get the people who are playing alone and simply looking to trade or just pass you by with no fuss.

You guys don't have a mental list of people you know to shoot on site?

Even with the small group of people I know that play, every one shares the unsavory people they have met. Works out well when you have a few groups of friends scattered all over the place. You guys need to network more :P

Game will be so much better without global chat, and direct chat is left. I also wish more buildings could be entered, it's disheartening to crawl through a town to find nearly no loot.

I found an interesting tactic, get a horde of about 10 Zeds to chase you and then sprint through a building where guys are camping out. Hilarity ensures.

the coast is suicide if you want to actually survive in this game. Cherno is full of "Sit on top of a building and snipe players" idiots. I've yet to kill any other player, i've never even shot at one. I just refuse to be part of the problem.

If you shoot at other players, especially on the coast or near spawn areas you're a Douche. Simple as that.

I guess you only play on the servers that show names then? ATM I usually just play wherever I can and the majority of the time people can't be identified unless they're gabbing about their loc in sidechat.

That's the mentality I had early on but i found that it wasn't conductive to good health, if someone has a weapon up and they're looking at me or if they even remotely appear to be trying to get behind me then they're dead, end of story. I'll disengage when I can but much of the time it's easier to just waste the person.

The "sit on the roof and snipe" types aren't really a problem for me because I usually do a decent bit of surveillance before I'm willing to enter town, I'm more worried about the types who are sitting 700 yards away with a dialed in Česká and just want my scalp.

Maybe it's just that i've been stuck as a bandit skin for the last 2 weeks but i honestly just can't trust strangers, I've been shot too many times to trust most pubs.

Hah.
I haven't died to a player since I stopped letting them decide to take the first shot.
Before that I'd died to 1 "bandit" and 3 "survivors".
I use 3 weapons, depending on ammo supply, my main is a M4A3 CCO SD, secondary is an M24 and my all purpose backup is an M249 SAW.

Good luck getting my name in the first place, much less 'hunting me down'.

Aside from that My group works together, we usually have 2-3 people on overwatch with M24s and DMRs and 1-3 others on scavenge duty.
We've got 4 pairs of NVG between us so far so night time is awesome.

LOVE me that Enfield, if it was just a teensy bit quieter it would be the best weapon in the game

Terrible gun because of its noise.
Winchester is just as accurate, higher damage, more rounds per reload and still one of the quietest non-suppressed main weapons if not the quietest.

Much better weapons are not that hard to get, even if ammo for a specific weapon is in short supply.
I might be [currently] a bit low on STANAG SD [2 clips] and M24 [2 clips] but I've got just short of 2500 rounds in my M249 and that is still quieter then the enfield plus I get 100 rounds per inventory slot and 200 rounds between reloads.

Today, between 4 of us, we killed 20+ people out in the wilderness™ [2 of us as snipers killed 10+ while overwatching for the others].
maybe 15 of those people wouldn't have shot at us? but then we're not going to wait and find out which 5 will.
1 dude we killed was pretending to be injured and trying to get people to help him, only to shoot them when they did, lucky we're not the type to fall for that and shot him first.
and yes we saw him kill someone else first, so in this case we saved atleast one of our group the trouble of running back north and getting regeared.

Now remember that us shooting people on site wouldn't be a problem, for them, if they took the time to scout out the places they're going, instead of running somewhere and hoping its safe.

Stay away from cities and airfields and army bases and if you have to go to one then take 5-10 mins to scout it out, watching for any activity.

Don't just run to one of the northern airfields with your makrov out hoping no one sees you.
there will be people there, there almost always is, and they have far better equipment then you so if you aren't careful they are going to kill you and then get back to doing whatever it was they went there to do.

I would absolutely love to get into DayZ, but uni is unfortunately eating up most of my time, and then there's money... Some day though, some day.

I mean there is supposed to be a trading, chatting game with meaningful trade-offs for just shooting on sight but really it is just Prisoner's Dilemma and no reason not to just kill people.

I came across a bugged guy that was stuck in the middle of the road immune to damage, he was chatting to people and his mate was shooting at anyone that came near. Pretty brutal.

Winnie is quiet and comes with lots of ammo, no way is it as accurate at intermediate/long range as the Enfield and it sure as hell doesn't hit as hard, not even close. Unfortunately the 500m zombie aggro radius of the SMLE makes it almost worthless, can be extremely effective situationally though.

How exactly are you carrying 3 guns and managing to carry an effective amount of ammo? TBH i reckon for all round versatility the m249 is probably the best weapon in the game, reasonable accuracy at all postures(great when prone) and you can just feed it stanag while you hoard up a main inventory full of boxes. I spent a long time roaming with just that and an m4sd simply because of the ease of use between the 2 of them.

Tents.

Put some tents in an out of the way place on a quiet server and then you can drop off ammo and stuff as you get it.
then you can use which ever weapon you like when you have enough ammo.

you have to make it well out of the way though, my tents are 3-4km from the places I normally go for fun and supplies and they aren't in a path someone would likely go to get anywhere.
with the current bugs they are only visible half the time too.

the Winchester has more drop, but its quite accurate once you account for that, and its plenty powerful.

So I had been going for around 6 days... half with a mate and the last few days solo.
Started up the game last night and I was back on the coast randomly with all my old equipment? Had a butt tone of stuff, cz, 1911, tons of food and water and other goodies.

I find out that i've spawned just near the south west airfield. After legging it into the dense treeline i slowly walk around to the back of the airfield where I can scope it out a bit. Seeing a few noobs running around with markarovs with 20+ zombies chasing them never gets old :P

Once that all dies down and goes quiet i slowly sneak into the airfield to find nothing, except 1 drm mag but no gun. Pointless :( Then I see the medic tents!.
It was around 8pm server time so there was still a little bit of lighting but pretty dark at the same time. Took me around 15 mins to get into the base quietly without walking into zombies or flare light.

Once inside, I do a little walk around and find nothing. I climbed up a deer tower to check if there was anything there. Just so happens to be that there was a man in that tower hiding... Face to face, guns in each others eyes. I simply told him if he shoots, we're both dead. I Was just about to log out when i noticed 2 guys running around shooting and yahooing about. One had some kind of a m16 and the other a pistol. The guy int the tower told me that they had been hunting him and he wanted help. So when they finally had a few zombies around them we opened fire. 1 down, then the red desync chain pops up... ****. I kept shooting his non moving body, but knew it wouldn't do anything. I crouch down and hope that keep a keen eye on the ladder. Next thing I know theres some guy standing over top of me shooting the dicks out of me... **** you lag... **** you in your **** mouth.
