ID's John Carmack Not Optimistic About 60FPS Gaming's Future

Unread postby News Portal » 25 May 12, 9:52 am

John Carmack, arguably one of the most influential figures in the development of modern gaming, responded to a user question on Twitter and denounced the likelihood of 60FPS gaming becoming a common thing. "There will still be lots of 30hz games, which I don't think it is a good trade," reads Carmack's response. "If TVs didn't add lag, it would be more clear cut."

This saddens me. Gaming is much more fun at 120fps/Hz. Everything just looks so much more fluid and feels more responsive. If gaming at 60 Hz isn't even going to become mainstream anytime soon then it'll be an even longer wait and more money for me to continue at 120.

And the difference? Nothing.. This entire generation, when speaking about consoles, was probably %80 30fps.

What a strange thing to say. Even saddens me to realise how much Carmack is outta the game.

Epic has taken up the cause to continue the brown pallet though.

Carmack's always been a graphics programmer first and game developer distant second, by his own admission.

Personally I much prefer games that run fast and look a little worse, but of course the importance depends on the game. A lot of people actively prefer the 'cinematic' feel 30FPS gameplay adds and if the game is not really fast-paced it's a worthwhile trade. Most of iD's games have been all about speed speed speed from Wolf3D to Rage so I'm not surprised to see this comment coming from him.

And I've got no problem with brown so long as it's used to contribute to the atmosphere of a game instead of just pasting it over the top of a scene to make it look more 'realistic'.

I have never met someone who prefers 30fps to 60fps in games.

Anyway, there is a simple solution to all of this. Buy a PC!

A PC that will play @ no lower than 60 FPS with everything turned right up will set you back a pretty penny assuming AAA titles

Not really.
Very few games are being built to tax a modern PC.

This. This is hardly a revelation. With improved horsepower comes improved graphics fidelity that developers can make use of. It also means developers will be less strict on optimisation/budgets.

Pick one: Awesome graphics / 60fps

Next console generation aren't going to give both.

I liked it. The initial texture pop ins was annoying, and up close and personal the textures were god awful at times. Nice engine though,w ould expect more given the competition these days.

no generation of anything is ever going to give both...

people are always going to want the best look available which will always mean pushing the current lot of hardware to its limits. Personally I'm happy to compromise visual fidelity for extra frames...
