I've never shot one.

On a completely unrelated sidenote, started working out some logistics to do a trip to Orange in the next 4-6 weeks for a weekend away.

I don't think so, firearms do have a valid use IMO. Target shooting is a legitimate sport and even recognized with a few events in the Olympics.. sure you might think it shouldn't be, but it is. They aren't as useful as vehicles per say, but you can't just stand there and say "this is a legal item, it can kill people, ban it" for one object, and not for another no matter how useful it is.

But as I said before.. it is a passionate subject, some people like myself are very pro gun, others aren't. Everyone is entitlted to their opinion :D

Actually, as a point of interest re the comment earlier about talking to someone who has suffered a tragedy with a firearm. When I was working for the Triple Zero call centre a few years ago with the NSW Ambulance Service I got a call late one night from an.. Uncle I think, of a kid who had been accidently shot while out hunting by his Father.

Somehow a rifle had discharged in the cab of the vehicle, bounced around the inside, then up through the roof and into the kids head. The Father was distrought and driving through the bush to get to the homestead (they were quite remote).

Took a few hours, I think he was airlifted out actually can't quite recall but it was a fairly tragic event. The kid survived, he was in the paper at the time and I think he was alright without brain damage - only because it was a ricochet I'd say.

the difference is that outside of recreation and farm use, guns serve no other purpose than to kill and to maim.

and? it's a gun, that is it's purpose. Growing up dad taught me how to shoot, grandpa gave me his old guns, I use to enter in the firing range comps, it was a lot of fun but at the same time they always taught me how dangerous they were

stupid people shouldn't have guns.

well that's my point, they should be completely unnecessary in modern society. I've got no problems with recreational shooting, in fact I'd love to go down to a range and try it out (and I actually love the show Top Shot :P ) but a concealed carry? No **** way hose.

As I said before, the difficulty is in deciding who can/couldn't.. what about off duty Police, should they be able to carry concealed?

The unfortunate fact is, there will be some idiot who gets a CCW Permit, goes to the pub, has a few beers and someone bumps him and suddenly someone is dead or seriously injured. Those are the people that shouldn't be able to carry, but there is no reasonable way to exclude them, just as he wouldn't be excluded from applying for a Firearms licence.

But that said, I refuse to be held accountable or be punished for the actions of others.

Edited to add.. no way josé ;)

Peter Sullivan: Why are you always smiling?
Connor Rooney: 'Cause it's all so **** hilarious.

Also, evening is good because I have a cup of tea!

Perfect example of poor firearms handling.

I think you can draw the line in that guns were designed first-and-foremost to kill living things, whereas a car is a method of transportation and most knives are used for cooking. Just to clarify, I would support restrictions on knives that are designed to hurt, ie swords and military kabar stuff. If people want to target shoot, that's fine, but their guns should be securely stored on a range and not in their own homes. Having a weapon close to hand seems to make people go into die hard mode.
