All up somewhere about the $1600 mark from Allneeds and PCCaseGear. Don't really want to go higher as my original budget was $1500

The case is going inside a desk, which means cooling is a bit of an issue. Was thinking of maybe buying an Antec Kuhler and making up a top vent to direct air away out the back of the desk, but may end up going with a Noctua NH-U12P. Not really sure, plus I have to make sure the RAM fits.

Videocard seems the best for under $400, plus I want a DisplayPort for my 3d Samsung and full size HDMI for the TV.

Putting in 3 TB of regular HDDs from my old box. Thinking of getting a new sound card to replace my aging X-Fi XtremeMusic.

So, thoughts, opinions, derision? Is faster memory worthwhile?

PS Unlikely to overclock (not that I really can) any time soon.

What have you got at the moment? That should always be your first step.

If you already have a Sandy Bridge PC, you won't see much improvement from what I've read.

I'll be getting a new one soon hopefully myself. Still finalizing which parts I'll get, but for now I'm gonna get a 3930K based system

I'm not sure the i7 is needed unless you do a lot of video encoding/3D rendering.

The old one is an i7-920 based socket 1366 system. The GF is getting most of it so parts are limited.

In that case you should see a vast improvement over what you currently have.

The system looks good from that spec list. You should be able to get better frame rates than what you've currently got.

(i7 will get you HT but if your gaming you wont notice the diff, plus the 3570 clocks a bit better for heat...)

Good point on the 3570. Performance doesn't seem that much less plus it gives a few OC options for $80 less.

Board - don't need wireless, have gigabit cabling . As said the overclock is not going to be much so the extra $25ish doesn't seem worth it.

I like the R3, something wasn't quite right with the Carbide when I looked that pushed the R3 in front.

7870 is a bit better all round than a 570. Might look at a 670 if I can get one cheap locally (video cards always die on me)

RAM is about the same.

I suppose I went a little overboard with 750 watts. Can cut that back provided it has all of the connectors. What's needed for a nVidia 670?

No optical needed. Have a few lying around.

Cooler seems a little bit meh. Currently a Prolimatech Megahalems in an Antec P180 gets up to 75° at 100% load with an i7-920.

More thinking needed it seems. Thanks for the tips.

Edit: If I get the Noctua NF-U12P I can drop the Xigmatuch 12cm fan I was going to put in the rear of the case and use one of the 2 Noctua fans I get.

For the case I was planning on moving both default 12cm Fractal fans to the front intake, 14cm Xigmatech in the side intake and now a 12cm Noctua NF-P12 exhaust in the back with the graphics card also acting as exhaust. Top and bottom vents likely blocked.

I have a tendency to run virtual machines if I need them. Plus I would like to remove as much need for paging as possible if not entirely.

Yea bud drop the Xigmatek XLF-F1455 140mm LED Fans
They sucked i cheap out and bought a few last build and argh i was glad to get rid of them were too noisy , i got gelid fans now.

Fair enough. Anyone know if the Bitfenix spectre fans are OK. Apparently they have issues if horizontally mounted, but can't find much else.

If not them, then Coolermaster Silent? Can't find much on these at all which I guess is a good thing.

gelid has been getting some good reviews lately, their cpu coolers have been getting my attention...

for fans. Noiseblockers/noctua's.... tho i think the corsair fans do ok.

no optical gives you moolah to play with else where, specifically if your not going with a hyper 212, might put you in price range for a H60... ivy doesnt cope well with wattage, so if your looking for 4.8 you will need a decent cooling solution.

650w will be fine so long as your running that gear and a single card.

seen 650's running dual 4970's on a 930 rig all OC'd and it chugged along, newer stuff doesnt draw the same powah.


If you haven't got a decent breeze, i would go a water option over a bigger air cooler, due to ambient tmeps generally being higher in an enclosed environment...


yep drop the 570 and go a 7970 if you can afford it, for DP and hdmi.

Updated the OP with new choices.

Wanted the side fan with LEDs, Gelid doesn't have these that I can easily get. If fan is too noisy, will use one of the resistors (LNAs) from the Noctuas to undervolt it.

Is there any real difference between the D3H and UD3H besides the overclocking extras? Only notable differences I can see is that the UD3H has onboard Displayport and SPDIF but loses 2 SATA 3 connectors. They even look almost identical.

If I'm ever insane enough to try SLI or Crossfire later I'll buy a new PSU.

UD = ultra durable, think they use higher quality parts for the mobo (or at the least advertise it that way). Might have to read around for some solid info on that.
