Go learn that Disco (repeat it), and come back and post what song it is ;) (hint - playing this publicly is as embarrassing as playing "Stairway to Heaven" publicly..as it is so overplayed by new players)

Okay I had to get a hint since I don't know much of this bands music.. once I had the rhythm right.. drop box link is here, please don't listen if you're sensitive to noobs failing musically but I semi kind of maybe slightly made it sound possibly just the tiniest bit right? haha

If playing something perfectly requires you to play it very very slowly, then that's what ya gotta do. Otherwise you're just practicing how to play something badly :P

But that's cool....you found the melody. Your tuner might have a metronome feature.

Oh, missed your reply here somehow! Hint or not, yes you have the right band :) It is the intro riff to "Enter Sandman" :D

Just listening to the file, it sound like the tuning may be off on the guitar, or maybe its just somewhat misplayed notes, and the final "7" note seems to be missing, that leads you back to the open E (0) on repeat. But the fact you got in and gave it a go is what is cool. You learnt a basic insight to reading TAB, and took on the challenge :)

And like Vital said, just play things slow and get the notes right, and then it will start to "sink in" and you will pay it without thinking at all after awhile.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPJKuygePHk is the actual song, listen to the intro before the distorted guitars come in.

No problem mate, hope they make it one piece.

I'm glad you found a salesman who gave a ****. The Cort will serve you well. Your finger tips will harden up, you have to keep practicing though. It's pretty damned painful until then, once you're there though it's easier to concentrate on getting the movements right.

Re your C, maybe try moving from an Am (A minor) to a C then back to Am. This equates to shifting one finger. It will give you an idea of the sound and the feel of the fingering. Your homework is to find what the Am chord in the open position looks and sounds like, and then describe the transition from Am to C then back again :)

Absolutely use a metronome when learning songs. Practice the notes with a SLOW tempo first until you can play it comfortably, then increase the tempo gradually and repeat until you hit the tempo of the song (the tab should say the tempo).

Practicing this to get your rhythm right is essential to playing well and it's something a lot of beginners dont bother with (short attention spans when learning new riffs) initially, which can be embarrassing when they play with a mate on drums for the first time.

You were indeed correct.. I need to get into the habit of tuning my guitar more often I think, I'd completely neglected to do it and was amazed at how out it was - will keep on top of it now :D

My fingertips constantly feel like I've burned them, I usually pick up the guitar a few times a day and practice for 15-20 minutes at a time before the fingers start to hurt and my hand starts to cramp.

I've seen metronomes before but I'm not sure if my tuner has an in built one, but I've got no idea how they work or what they do .. do you just start it, and pluck a string each time it does its thing or?

It's just for keeping steady and consistant time. Like having a very basic drummer.

Most songs we listen to are in 4/4 time. I'm sure you've heard the 1,2,3,4 count at the beginning of a song before (4 beats per bar)

Your tuners metronome should make a different type of beep on "1"

So it'd go 1,2,3,4, 1,2,3,4 and so on.

There will probably be a 3/4 setting too which would be 1,2,3 1,2,3

3/4 time is what you would be hearing in a "waltz" type of feel....like triplets or 3 beats per bar.

I hope we're not just confusing you further. It's hard to explain music with text :P

Persoanly I don't like hearing beeps...."clicks" from a more traditional metronome blend in a bit better.

A metronome is a device that gives off a steady beat. Think of it like a clock with a pendulum, except you can adjust how fast the pendulum swings. Each 'click' or 'swing' of the pendulum is 1 beat. They'll also have a chime or a beep which can be set to play every X number of beats, to signify the start of a bar (ie your time signature).

So if the particular piece of music you were trying to learn was set in a 4/4 time signature with a tempo of 100 beats per minute, you'd just adjust the speed of the metronome to 100bpm and set it to chime every 4 beats. Then if you wanted to slow down to make learning the piece easier, you'd adjust the tempo slower on the metronome.

They're a pretty common thing for people learning to play any instrument.

I just tap my foot, works fine

You could use superglue on your fingers but it's better if you just keep doing what your doing and build up callouses. I mean that guy in the Summer of '69 played until his fingers bled, can't say I ever have....

Try playing with a metronome. You'll be amazed how much it makes a difference. Definitely helped my sense of timing.

Watch out, the one fingered guitarists have found the thread. :P
It's ok, you can come on, but your pet drummer has to stay outside..:P

I have a natural sense of timing, besides my foot would get jealous of a metronome

On occasions where I'm feeling adventurous I'll use up to 4 fingers at once thank you :)

Actually I consider myself a drummer first. Bass was an easy and obvious choice for a 2nd instrument.

There a product called Finger Ease that you spray onto the strings that apparently helps build calluses and stops string squeak and all that. That's just the product blurb mind you. I used it for a while and couldn't really tell whether it worked or not, but for $12 or thereabouts it might be worth trying. Just out of curiosity, can you find what string gauge the guitar uses? There should be some info with the paperwork.
