Review: Binary Domain (PC)

Unread postby News Portal » 4 May 12, 1:45 pm

[app=7805]Binary Domain[/app] released on the PS3 and 360 back in February, but has now made its way to the PC after a short delay. Promising a squad-based, third-person shooter with RPG elements and shooting robots to death, it sounds like an interesting sleeper hit. The reality, as Tim discovers, is somewhat different.

this review lost me in the first paragraph. very badly handled. had u look through the options, u would see a command to change all references to the xbox controller to keyboard and mouse, therefore making this review redundant. poor form, gon, very poor form.

Those options are only available in the config utility which you have to run before you start the game. You can't access them from in the game.

If you just fire up the game and can't figure out the controls, you're stuck in the situation I was in, smashing the keyboard one key at a time until you figure out which key is 'back'. Or, when you can't, killing the process and restarting.

This is really bad!

EDIT: And any game which automatically launches in gamepad mode is unimaginably bad. Not to mention the cursor-less menus, or the fact that if you play the game in windowed mode your mouse isn't locked to the window border and so will just go right out of it! It is not good at all, no matter which way you slice it.

Was it that bad on console or did they take a B grade game and make it worse when they attempted to port it?

no, its got TONS of problems. its a very bad mass effect/gow clone. it can be fun, but mostly a frustrating mess. and yes i did think it was crappy that they started the game with gamepad controls and every keyboard key ur used to pressing did nothing. also no mouse interface. wtf sega. we all know they crashed after genesis :) u still should of mentioned u can change the interface, making ur first complaint sort of irrelevant. i read the review fully now, and cant fault the rest of it. sorry i bought it. most complaints would be eased in mp, but theres only horde mode. my friends are playing it on xbox, i think they got suckered

It got a lot of positive reviews on console, generally around the 7 or 8 range. It appears to be a straight port, just with very little understanding of PC workings, which unfortunately makes it hard to recommend.

I don't know if the voice recognition on console was any better but I used both a headset mic and a high-quality stand-alone mic that I use for interviews, and both were terrible.

Glad to hear it :) You're probably right, I could have made that more clear.

It's shocking on 360, too. I'm not sure if it's "calibrated" in a way that doesn't understand hurrr-durrrr Austrayan, but I couldn't get it happening properly, either. Manual commands it was - not that anyone was particularly gracious whenever I told 'em I thought they'd just done a cool thing. Also can't upgrade the secondary weapon, wtf. Becomes superfluous in like 5 secs.

I'm 100% fine with games that play better with a Xbox 360 controller, A lot of games do. Most 3rd person games will almost always be better with a 360 controller.

Xbox controller is a moot point on ports, any knowing pc gamer will have a xbox controller already for this exact reason.
I've had one for years, even played a few sp fps with one since its more comfortable on the futon behind me.

I played through it tonight. I have to admit it has pretty cheesy dialog and the cryengine is really showing its age on PC. But underneath the surface the story was interesting enough.

I'm glad I waited on the patch as they added FOV adjusters to the configuration tool and resolved the menu with keyboard and mouse problem.

It enabled me to play through it successful using the keyboard and mouse, but had the added side effect of making the hard difficult almost trivial (the difficulty seems to be better matched to console controllers, not the superior aiming of the mouse :) ).

It's not stellar but its a good way to fill a few hours. However as mentioned in a post above I'd wait for a reduction in price before picking this up :)

I watched tons of pre you tube videos before release on this game I was quiet thrilled by it in the first videos and as I progressed watching others it became frank to me its just a duck down and shoot video game! a DDAS! & this does abbreviate badly! :)
Anyway if you watched previews before buying you'd see the games playability, its an interesting game for the boredom moment, so with passable porting graphics, a good storyline, with superb imaginative models and scenes..I am waiting for the bin price, I'll buy it then for around $5-$10's, then its not a bad game at all! :)
Patience..patience..everyone. People rush far too much these days.
