Barn door inside softbox ? Is it possible ?

Unread postby Bluefire » 2 May 12, 9:28 pm

So my wife ordered her strobe lights and softboxes... which arrived today.
3x 300ws generic "godox" chinese lights with 1/8 power reduction.
They are FAR to bright even at lowest power inside the softboxes even with baffles installed.

Soo we need to know is it possible to fit a barn door / gel holder inside the softboxes do hold some ND gels ?
Bowens type s rings with the 3 lugs fitted..
Anyone aware of something premade to do the job.. or is it time to pull the welder out ?

What are you attempting to light where a 300w strobe in a softbox with baffles is too much light? Is it not an option to just stop your lens down?

Shes using a Sigma 50mm 1.4, Shooting at iso100, 1/125 and wants to shoot 4.0 to blur the background.. So.. No.. Cannot stop the lense down.
Hence needing to cut the light down.
Its possible to shoot under current conditions if your happy with fix it in photoshop, trying to get better straight out of camera to improve work flow for her.
Room is approx 3m x 3m.
Currently doing black background lowkey until white vinal backdrop arrives.
Plus will need the black background option for mum/bub <2wk shoots.
Using 2x300w @ 1/8th, key/fill. key is in 1.5m octa box. fill is in 1.2x0.8m retangular, both have internal baffles.

Am I to assume from the question that installing a ~100mm square of ND over a strobe inside of a softbox is not a common thing and noone has a rig designed to do it commonly availible ?
Aware of any negative effects that would make it non-advisable ?

No it is not a common practice to attach an ND filter to the strobe within a soft box, it is more common practice to place the ND filter on the lens. You will get the same effect, reduced light at the same aperture.

Hope this helps.

Edit:
If you are thinking of going with your solution maybe try gaffa taping piece of cardboard with a hole in it instead of a ND filter, similar to your idea but simpler. The smaller the hole the less light.
As long as the cardboard does not touch the flash tube you should not have a problem. If the cardboard is black you should not have a kelvin shift either.
