The real point is that you have to know what you are looking for when buying second hand, it make no difference if it's Cash Converters or the bloke down the street. People try to pull outrageous stunts no matter who's selling. Buying second hand does take practice, I've been doing it all my life, and yeah, I got some dodgy deals along the way, but I've had dodgy new crapus too. Live and learn.
Re-cycling I calls it. "Let the buyer beware", as they say over there.

Better that you carry your Uncle's guitar playing spirit, and memory forward, I reckon.
.

Not to mention that's how John Butler starting playing, at least on a slide guitar ;)

I too have a Yamaha guitar (paid around $600-$700 for it but you get ones a lot cheaper in that range) and they sound awesome for the price.

Here ya go Disco. This is just one area you can start working on....chords.

Image

The top row = 1st fret etc.
Lines left to right = Strings, lowest in pitch to highest (E,A,D,G,B,e)
X = String not played
O = Open string played
1-4 = Which finger to use (or whatever works for you)

correct
and for X, if you "mute" the string that also works. to mute a string, just hold a finger on it but dont press it down against the fretboard

Alright, so I've spent the last twenty minutes practicing the Chromatic Scale and also trying out a few chords, just G Major, C Major and D Major .. I struggle a bit with C Major, as my fingers like to touch more than one string.

Also. Holy **** my fingers are sore >.<

Scales and chords? Unless you're intent on becoming a guitar genuis, grab a songbook of your favourite band, learn to read tab and start to just play and enjoy the sounds you can make (imo).

Haha not intent on that at all Mellie :) At the moment I'm just following a ten week guide which week one involves the scales and chords, that being said I will start doing some tabs at some point if this gets boring (which I'm sure it will).

To be honest though I'm struggling to practice for 20 minutes before by fingertips feel like they're being sliced open by razors, so I've been doing 20 minutes before work and 20 minutes after work. I'm sticking with it though, it's just going to be a bugger until my finger tips toughen up a bit.

I've actually got blisters on two fingers, woot.

especially with acoustic, play some easy songs (wonderwall - oasis, time of your life - greenday, push - matchbox 20 to name a few) and as mellie said....enjoy the sounds! way more enjoyable way to learn
