Any suggestions of gear? Obviously I'd need a joystick throttle and rudder set, but do you use just a regular stick or do you use a different type of flight controller like a two handed..yoke, thingy?

Edit, EEP.. for a 2 hander flight yoke, rudders and throttle, it's getting damned pricey

If you're really only keen on civilian aircraft then maybe a yoke is what you need... However, that becomes extremely limiting when you start trying jets.

I think my Saitek pro-flight pedals were $150? You can get a Saitek Pro joystick/throttle for maybe $200. But even a basic joystick from EB at $40-$50 would be perfect until you're ready to upgrade. Also, if you buy one like that it will have a twist-stick for ruddering which is perfectly serviceable.

Yep, convinced myself, grab a cheap joystick and that will be all you need in order to see if you'll enjoy flight sims.

I might actually just buy a joystick and go from there, before investing the $$ for the full sim experience - there are some nice not too expensive joysticks out there..

Any thoughts on the Saitek Cyborg F.L.Y 5 Flight Stick?

Two throttles and twist function for rudder use.. seems alright?

yeah get a joystick. i just got a little logitech one here which is fantastic. I'm keen to get track IR as well as the full yoke setup with rudder pedals but we're looking at around $500 for each setup.

PCCG have a good range of flight sim gear if you're interested http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?mai ... th=284_953

edit: I'm actually thinking about getting either rudder pedals or one throttle quadrant soon. Rudder pedals + joystick would be fantastic.

and they don't even have any plans to put jets into the game :icon13: :icon13: :icon13: :icon13:

Thats where I found the Saitek :D I love PCCG..each time I've purchased from there I've been happy, so they get my repeat business.

I haven't owned a joystick since.. X-Wing Alliance  So I'm not all that familiar with the field, but the Saitek looks quite good, and its' not bad at $75 either I think. I like the look of it.

I got my pedals and Warthog from http://www.flightsimstore.com/, they did well.

The 3D Pro is a well rated all in one joystick and comes pretty cheap. But seriously, grab the cheapest joystick at your local games retailer as the control method really won't matter until you're right into it.

And if you did get into it, TrackIR is an absolute must (is brilliant also for racing). It's probably the best piece of kit I've ever bought for what it adds to the overall gaming experience.

Credit to Cyclobs, good suggestions all 'round.

and on that note, if you're keen on learning how to fly the big jets i'll be happy to give you guys an tutorial ingame and teach you some of the basics. Flying big jets is pretty hard at first but lots of fun when you learn how to fly them properly

Now that sounds like a plan.. I really like the idea actually, having known a few people that fly IRL as commercial pilots and as someone who has worked for an airline.

Im just starting out too Disco LT, and I have purchased a simple Logitech Attack 3 stick $40 (no rudder twist) and use the pedals from my Logitech DFGT wheel (set to combined axes) for the rudder controls. Then in game its left hand on the stick, and right on the mouse for freelook and its doing quite wheel for me as a beginner setup.

Next is TrackIR 5 and then that setup well do me well for ages. does the main things i need. (btw, TrackIR 5 is sooooooooo much cheaper from the US store and get sent here, under $300) Aussie prices for it are insane.

EDIT - Heres two sticks both under $35 with free delivery.

Yeah its probably like my Attack 3 Logitech, which has a little dial for throttle built into the body base. Works quite well too :)

Thinking of getting into Arma 2. What games/expansions/packs/whatever do I need?
Is purchasing it on Steam advised against? I thought I heard it's a **** or not compatible with mods or something.

Arma 3 looks amazing and I kind of want to get in on this early. :P
Steam: Shpleboy
Minecraft: LogicalHero
Battlefield 3: LogicalHero

ArmA 2 on Steam has come a long way and is fine to mod. I, however, had numerous issues if mods didn't work with getting the entire game to work again.

Got sick of it, bought them all on disc from EB, happy for Bohemia to get the extra coin (rebought Armed Assault Queen's Gambit for $10 the other night 'cause I cbf going downstairs for the cd-key).

You really only need ArmA 2 and Arma 2: OA... the BAF and PMC expansions are definitely worth it but rarely required to play online. I do think both those two expansions have excellent SP gameplay though so I think they're essential.

Highly recommend starting with the ArmA 2 SP campaign as it teaches you a lot of the basics.. then once you have the hang of that get into the GoN server 'Warfare' mode. Once you're comfortable with that it's time to check out ACE 2 (massive realism mod) and maybe hang out with the AEF boys as they run some hardcore mission types quite frequently.

Good luck Moose, it really is an incredible gaming experience when you start moving away from spammy warfare style gameplay and get into night missions where you're the insurgent with the rusty AK fighting the imperialist US pigdogs.

Any ArmA game you buy on Steam will run without steam even running if you start it from the game exe.. Is not probs there at all, and Ive had no probs with mods etc with steam version, as it really doesnt rely on steam at all.

And the BAF addon is beautiful, some of the best vehicle models etc in the game :) PMC doesnt bother me so much though.

Get the Arma X pack.. about $50 for the entire ArmA range I believe

EDIT - $60 for everything ArmA, including the original Operation Flashpoint
