That right there shows you have no understanding of opengl

oh? Please enlighten me.

This is all I care about…

youtube "directx vs openGL"

lots of comparison videos around, but all round there isn't that much difference between them. Some argue that openGL is a bit more efficient over directx

Thinking about giving Linux another whirl.

I'm thinking either Ubuntu or Mint. However Ubuntu has that Unity interface which hasn't really been popular AFAIK.

you can still install gnome on ubuntu

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install gnome

and on top of that you can get rid of unity. I'm planning on doing a bare bone ubuntu install soon so i can run gnome without all the other clutter.

Unity has gotten better, but you have many other choices too. Gnome is alright (I prefer Gnome2 TBH), XFCE is very light weight, try a bunch of them out in a virtual machine maybe, get a feel for which one you like :)

Steam is coming to Linux, not necessarily the games. If the games don't support Linux (which is most of them), then don't expect to be playing them just because you have Steam.

It's up to the game developers whether they will support Linux, not Valve. I doubt Steam being on Linux is likely to change the status quo all that much for major developers.

don't want to sound like I'm angry or anything which I'm not, but no ****.

anything that's steamplay at the moment is about 5 minutes away from being linux compatible as well. That's what I'm looking forward to because all the best games (IMO) on steam are steamplay already so we're good to go.

any big name publisher not interested in cross-compatibility can go jump in a fire and honestly all the publishers who fit into that category have already driven me away with their crappy products anyway.

The whole advantage dx has over opengl is the fact that it reduces the workload so much. Unless opengl can come up with(or has comeup with recently) some standard that is accessible alongside all systems, then dx will always be better in this aspect.

OpenGL is for graphics, not for sound or input. The comparison would be between OpenGL and Direct3D.

SDL has been around for ages, http://www.libsdl.org/

Some good news then.

Interestingly, AMD has some release partnership with steam for their drivers yes? AMD drivers aren't that great on linux, so maybe this move will give AMD some more reasons to release decent drivers for linux.

Also openAL is for sound (obviously). I believe openGL often gets the new features before DX? Things like tessellation.
What can change the nature of a man?

DirectX's Sound and input modules have been depreciated over the years so they do not really count…

I started giving up on Ubuntu the moment they started integrating social networking stuff as default in the top bar. The Unity interface was the final nail in the coffin. These days my preferred distro is Mint.

On a side note however...prepare for incoming Linux related TF2 hat...
