Well most of Studio Ghibli's stuff is pretty good.

Zombywolf wrote:anyone seen FLCL? Only 6 episodes made I think but damn it was cool.
I thought it was pretty weird, but in a good way. Unique, separate from the majority of the riff-raff out there. But yeah, one of the more memorable ones.

I agree though that good animes are few and far between.

FLCL is definately in my top 5 anime series...its is completely nuts but just so much fun. I'd follow that with Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genisis, Texhnolyze and Gantz as the rest of my top 5 with Hellsing just edging outside.

Any movie by Studio Ghibli is amazing, especially Grave of the Fireflies, that film just makes emotions do whatever it wants to and i love every second of it.

I started with Ghost in the Shell (on SBS) and Akira, kept going from there but haven't watched a massive amount of anime in recent years due to time constraints and a bit of loss of interest.

I have started to watch Wings of Honnesaise about 3 times on tv and each time I fall asleep about 2/3 of the way through and wake up for credits....very frustating.

Grave of Fireflies turned me into a blubbering mass! A year after watching it and I still get all choked up just telling people the premise.

Just watched this, thought it was really good so thanks for the recommendation. This is the type of anime i like :)

Sword of the Stranger was Oscar shortlisted, and by god it deserved it. LOVE that movie, so very very much. But I think I need to watch Gilgamesh now.

Is it bad that I watched it when it was on tv in japan and all i remember is one scene where it's raining and there's a piano or something?

That's pretty much symbolic of the entire thing. I'm getting depressed just thinking about it. Yay!

I haven't seen alot of the shows you guys are talking about unles it's been on SBS late at night so i'll have to do some digging.

But by far, my favourites would be the Robotech series, first season being the best for me, Trigun and i remember watching Tekkaman as a kid so i'll have to track down some copies and watch it again!

...

sorry i might be just sentimental, but please don't call it Robotech, at least call it Macross assuming that's the part you liked since the first part is basically Macross, second part iirc is Mospeada, and the third part is Southern Cross. 3 different anime series with absolutely no relation with each other.

The three combined (and chopped, mutilated, and mashed together) is what they used to make up what ends up as Robotech in the western by Harmony Gold.

Sorry to used to talking to my mates, if it's not called Robotech it's not known lol

Yeah each series wasn't directly related but where a part of the same universe? Or was i high whilst watching them?

Each was rather different, just couldn't really get into Mospeada or Southern Cross. The whole first series i wanted to slap Rick, choosing the wrong girl everytime!

I refer to the series as Robotech simply because that was how the series was introduced to Western mainstream audiences and that was how I viewed the series as a kid growing up in the 80's. If the enthusiasts state that the original unaltered series were superior (story-wise) then I'll take their word for it but I couldn't be bothered watching the japanese versions all over again.

nah, absolutely no relation whatsoever, Harmony Gold edited the lines and footage in order to link the three different series together. Unlike the other two however Macross series continued onwards spanning multiple series that ran to this day as it was the most popular one.

Harmony Gold however does not possess the license for anything other than the 1st Macross series,

So they cannot take any material from Macross Plus, Macross 7, Macross DYRL, Macross 2 (which we pretend never existed), Macross Zero, Macross Frontier (most recent one), or anything else including the games.

so Harmony Gold made their own materials afterwards hence why the drastic change on style with the Robotech materials after the original run that was made of the japanese anime footage.

They changed quite a few things, back during the time when Robotech was aired, they weren't exactly too keen on some of the topic that Macross used so it was edited to ... ehem... suit the audience more.

And naturally in order to link 3 totally different series, they altered a fair number of things to reduce the jarring transition and made sense to an extent.

Berserk have taken a really weird direction lately though, it feels weird to see Guts not butchering demons by truck load as a daily routine.
