Dead Space Writer Calls Gears of War Story 'Atrocious', Swiftly Backpedals

Unread postby News Portal » 25 Apr 12, 12:41 pm

A week or so ago, Dead Space story producer Chuck Beaver said some pretty harsh things about the Gears of War franchise and its story, up to and including calling it "literally the worst writing in games". Fast forward to yesterday and Beaver is now backpedalling, saying it was "taken out of context". To be fair, it seems the context was more like 'the writing was bad, but people still like it', and it seems his new statement does focus on the game's success rather than its story. Read the full story, including the original comment and Beaver's new statement, over at IGN.

He wrote the story for a game set on a derelict space ship over run with some sort of creepy alien/mutant-y things and he's bagging someone else's story?

Yeah, its story is better then GOW story and I love both franchises. If I had to choose I would definitely choose dead space though.

Well he is right about Gears Of War at least.
What a horribly average game.

people actually kicked up a fuss about this? surely even the fans can admit that despite really enjoying playing it, Gears Of War has an incredibly atrocious story

Very fun to play, completely forgettable story.

He shouldn't have backpedaled, everyone knows it was little more then a shoot-fest.

Well Dead Space was a pretty **** story (**** as in nothing original or unexpected), but the game was all kinds of fun. GoW 1 was ok but I never finished it, never really saw why everyone loved it so much.

Gears of war has a terrible story.

Dead space seemed to be much much better but hardly the pinnacle of story writing.

Chuck, you poor man, SS2 still craps over Dead Space "story". It's like watching a middle rung sports star chew out a lower rung sports star - the middle rung is mildly "better" but a long way from top tier.

To clarify my earlier comment, I didn't say the Dead Space story was bad just pointed out it's one of the most clichéd plots in space-based scifi. I don't think that's a particularly strong position from which to launch an attack on another writer's work. It's better to shut up or at least not be so specific in your criticism.
