Random Lag

Unread postby Ntice » 15 Mar 12, 5:26 pm

I have recently noticed, particularly with server 15 dust 2 that there are random patches of lag as if fps dropped to 30 or high ping.. It comes and goes but sometimes stays for quite a while...

This might be connected to the thread brought up by fimmwolf regarding pings, but I am finding these random spikes incredibly annoying and I know I am not the only one getting them.

Before anyone points out I need a new computer - I assure you I don't. This problem is probably a week and a bit old so its fairly recent and I haven't altered any of my settings.

Currently running at 300fps normally - (GTX560)

Rate = 30000
Cmdrate = 66
updaterate = 66

Is there perhaps a setting I should adjust or is the server just not holding tick/fps when it is full?

The theoretical maximum rate you can have on a 66 tick server is 83,160. This is your tick rate multiplied by your net_maxroutable value

66 x 1260 = 83,160

Many servers however limit the clients rate to a maximum of 50,688. It's a bandwidth issue I guess.

Regarding fps: most of what I've read on the subject of frames per second recommend an fps_max of "101" since your monitor generally will only have a refresh rate of 85Hz.

cheers

I just had a go with the rates peber posted up in another topic and the server didn't have a problem at all.. But I was not in server 15 so it might be just that server - Will keep team posted.

Well I was just in there and didn't see much but expected it as there were only 4 people :P

I wouldn't say its connected to fimmwolf's post as he said it was resolved when he restarted his router which would say it was client side not server side.

Ill give it a reboot when they leave but I don't think that would be the cause for the issue. I will be able to check again around mid day tomorrow but if people ain't in there wont be able to do much until Monday as I am away for the weekend.

So I can get some more detail, when it happens how long does it stay for and is everyone effected? You said its like pings increase but do they? Is it at certain choke points in the map or everywhere? Also if you can let me know if the tick is dropping below 64 that would be good.

Yeah cozi - certain choke points of the map especially when it is full.

I haven't noticed it so badly last few days but was definitely there for a bit. It was noticed by a few other players but not everyone seemed to get it which was why I was pretty confused. Major point is jumping gap out of ct spawn and mid.

Duration would be anywhere between 2 seconds and 20 seconds.

And yeah, I was watching ping and fps and both would suggest no problems at all when a spike does occur so yeah, was wondering if server was dropping tick. I am not sure when you reset the server, but it seemed better over the weekend, only happened very briefly for like 5 seconds maybe one a map

Cozi - it is doing it again.

Around 4:20pm today and 10pm (SYDNEY TIME) last night but I'm starting to think it might be a steam problem and not source.

I tried to quit source and opened up skyrim and skyrim was lagging as well. Someone suggested it could be cpu overload but i restarted computer and shut it off for a day and it was still happening.

Also, I am currently running the quad core i7 2700k processor with 12 gigs of ram so I doubt it is that. Also, as mentioned before, have spoken to people and others are getting it too but not everyone. I don't know know to what severity other people get it though but mine is pretty bad - almost as if I can't move mouse.

Hrmm.. Ok I am home for the next hour or so ill jump in now and have a look.

Edit: So was in the for about 45 mins and didn't notice one thing. Asked a couple of people in server if they were having issues and they didn't seem to be.

Your not with Telstra by any chance are you? I really don't think its much on our end. Ill get a few other admins to keep an eye on it tonight and see how we go.

Edit2: Sigh I was in server 18.... Fail.

I initially thought so Blaze - But it wasn't the case :(

Computer is in the shop again so hopefully that will all be fixed, thinking it was something to do with windows 7 as a whole and whether it was corrupted with its interaction with graphics cards as my RADEON HD6850 has been playing up as well.

There goes my skyrim files :(

Although this is unrelated, what's the general view on forced decent rates.

In this day and age, even with congestion etc etc, no one should be really using default rates.

Oh valve, you made source cos cs1.x sucked with 56k but you forgot the function of time and technology.

all for forced rates...majority of people should be able to hold 30/67/67 unless its shared net....maybe introduce some forced rate servers and some uncapped ones?

I have always thought about enforcing higher rates but if it was going to be implemented the lowest would be 45. When I was with a previous ISP and capped it was unplayable at 67 but when dropping to 45 I could actually get a game in.

I may do some testing and see how its taken by everyone.
