Cars with "Fog" Lights on at lowbeam.

Unread postby Bluefire » 17 Apr 12, 8:03 pm

We need an advertising campaign like the seatbuckle ones and a police crack down with 10x fines or an change to the australian standards.
You MUST turn your foglights OFF when you dip to lowbeam for oncomming traffic.
It is illegal not to.
It is illegal to drive arround in town with foglights on.
So many on the roads tonight.. makes me want to leave my highbeams on, wait till they flash me, then hit the driving lights.
I wont.. because I might kill someone innocent in the car with the retarded driver, or they might run into a car behind me...
But damn I want to.
If every retard driving with their foglights on tonight crashed into the ocean and sank without a trace it would be a better world for it..
If you know someone who does it and they are in arms reach... break their nose and tell them they are a hazard to other motorists and if you can get hold of it, cut their licence up.

Edit: added a poll! :)

What foglights are you talking about, factory fitted or those giant 4x4 ones?

I have factory fitted fog lights on my Impreza. I drive around town with them on all the time. And will probably continue to do so.

If people are can't drive because of my fog lights being on, they probably don't have the capacity to operate a motor vehicle in general.

Technically driving with fog lights on when its not foggy is illegal. The only reason I would ever have them on if it wasn't foggy would be to spot roos at night or something. Actually, I would probably have them on if my headlights were dim but if that was the case the car would obviously need a service or a defect sticker.

Whilst being illegal dependant on the type of light foglights/headlights make rearview mirrors painful to look through and kill the vision for oncoming traffic.

Illegal from what I can tell (I was pullled over a few years ago and cautioned for doing this very thing).

http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/sa/consol_reg/arr210/s217.html
217—Using fog lights

(1) The driver of a vehicle fitted with front fog lights or rear fog lights must not operate the fog lights unless the driver is driving in fog or other hazardous weather conditions causing reduced visibility.

Offence provision.
(2) In this rule:
"front fog light" means a light (other than a headlight) fitted to the front of a vehicle to improve illumination of the road in fog, snowfall, heavy rain or dust clouds.

Looking at the legislation.nsw.gov.au site (for my state), it simply says:
217 Australian Road Rule not reproduced
Note 1. Rule 217 (Using fog lights) of the Australian Road Rules has not been reproduced in these Rules. This rule has been left blank in order to preserve uniformity of numbering with the Australian Road Rules.

There may be other provisions for daytime running lights, although these are usually never as bright and annoying.

I'm not a fan of them either to be honest, where I live the streetlights are pretty **** though and generally a lot of drivers cruise around town with their high beams on, which is worse :/

Giant 4x4 ones ? .. you mean driving lights mounted between the headlights ??

I mean those factory 3-6" lights they put below the headlights on quite a few cars these days.. same brightness as highbeams, Just aimed a little lower so the person on comming cannot see the road or you car for the last 50m before they pass you...
Next person to pull into a parking lot after tailing me with those on gets my club lock driven through their cars lights and a massive note keyed into their bonnet :)
They are FOG lights, if its not FOGGY turn the fkn things OFF.

People make me want to buy a pair of hella 4000 pencil beams with HID kit for the wifes car as well.
On coming car with foggies (55/65w) on..
Meet my highbeams (60w)..
On comming car with foggies hits his highbeams as well..
Meet my (100w) spotlights.
Now meet a tree and die in a fire :)
I wont.. because they might kill someone innocent.. and someone would have to clean up their corpse.. but if it wasnt for those other people.... ooooh I want to!

Meh, they are about as bright as low beam anyway.
Honestly see no real issue.

Pretty sure you live in my area too, might be me you see around with fog lights on all the time :P

Actually matty they are the same brightness as a standard HIGHBEAM not lowbeam (have a look at the spec's) they are just aimed a little lower on the road and defused wider than a highbeam (so are better at blinding the oncoming car right as it passes you)

I'll be totally honest, as a car enthusiast since forever I have never once gone "that guy has his fog lights on and I noticed them to cause an inconvenience to my vision" Or know anyone one else to have a problem with it. (unless in circumstances of after market fog lights)

I'm pretty surprised you have noticed it tbh.

My factory fitted foglamps illuminate the road about 10m in front of the car. If this is causing an adverse reaction to your driving, time to stop driving.

Legality aside for a moment;

I like the look of driving lights/fog lights, and they generally don't bother me when I'm passing the opposite direction.

However!
They have to be properly adjusted, just like regular headlights.
In factory form, this is almost never a problem.

Get someone with a modified front spoiler/air dam though (or self-mounted on a bull bar) and there is a very good chance the lights are NOT adjusted properly.

These are the people who are the problem.

I have no issue with other peoples fog lights, legal or not. Some factory fitted headlights are brighter than fog lights, especially those LED lights almost every SS is fitted with :/

I love the look of my fog lights as well, and as with MadMoose above, they barely light more than about 10m in front (or 5-10 behind).

Seriously doubt you could be talking about factory fitted fog lights being the issue.

I just wish we had no stupuid law preventing us from using them whenever we want. I wish police would pick on the hoons, or idiots that play the music so loud you can hear them coming from 10km away, not factory fitted fog lights.

Edit: I added an option to your poll :D
