I like to play strategy games slowly and methodically, as if I was a real commander wanting to minimise casualties. The differance between my own and others play style became most apparent when I tried a coop game of Company of Heroes with 2 other members of my family.

Both of the other two would rush forward and steamroll the Germans into the ground, charging through machinegun fire and infantry lines. I however would advance scouts ahead while slowly bounding forward my infantry force with machine guns and mortars just to their rear to cover any hasty retreat needed or lend support to an assault. When I met resistance I stopped, carefully positioned troops then executed a deliberate plan. The others reacted to resistance by using loose tactics and redirecting more troops and firepower to the trouble spot.

The differance: both of the others advanced and captured territory faster and basically doubled my kill count. But I was the one who's casualty count was 2 while theirs was getting close to the hundred mark.

This is exactly what I'm doing in Skyrim and it's awesome! It almost seems like it was designed to be played this way. Everyone else seemed to blast their way through and were getting their dragon armour within the first few days of play... I have 184hrs on record and have only just got mine, and it actually feels like an extremely epic achievement and that I've actually spent enough time in this world to earn it. Also, more-difficult enemies are revealed at a slower pace due to my slower levelling progress, which makes each new reveal more of an "oh wow, cool!" moment. The only problem is I don't think I'm even half of the way through the game yet!

Same here, Its the only game rockstar hasn't brought to PC thus far.

Playing slow is great.. the problem is games these days seem to have about 3 writers, One does 10-20 core quests, One does 20-50 major chain quests, the last one writes 500 side quests.
I enjoy core and major chain quests... but theres only so many times I can go pick apples for someone and not even be able to eat one.. then get paid 50cents for 15min of work.
They need to make it so quests get a priority level, side quests with 0 impact on character, 0 impact on environment, 0 impact on story need to be in 8point font and always default to the bottom of a quest list. So we can ignore the 20 quests that have been duplicated 25 times each to make up the 500 side quests.
Then give core and main quests their own colour etc.

I really enjoyed skyrim.. for a while... but after becoming leader of wolves, assassins, theives, mages and completing a bunch of useless quests... I havent played in 2 months or more.. its still installed.... still not complete.. and Im sad to say.. still of no more interest.

It's what I've been doing with ME3, haven't even finished it so I don't know what all the fuss is about the ending yet :P But it's more that I'm getting distracted with multi-player than taking the SP campaign slow. I tend to play the SP campaign in an episodic format, play a few discrete missions then go and play MP some more :)

I agree, the risk of making a game too slow paced and large is that it then starts to detract from the game's main narrative. I actually found RDR to be a bit too slow paced with what I thought was a fairly mundane side quest element. I also found the open environment of Arkham City to be a hindrance on the storyline experience, as opposed to Arkham Asylum. Though I did love Fallout 3 and New Vegas and taking my time on those games really made me feel I got my money's worth.

I haven't even started Skyrim yet, I feel I need to devote all my focus on that game yet I need to finish a whole bunch of other games first.

I do like taking it all in. Even with fps games I replay scenes to test the various AI reactions, and do it cleaner.
GTA-VC and SA, must find all stunt jumps. GTA4, just didn't grab me, but.
Easter eggs...must find the Easter eggs.

Games like Oblivion I leave no stone unturned.
FO3 - Yep! Made a little mod with sticky notes that I attach to each misplaced rock in the FO3 and FO-NV Wasteland.
Can't see the rocks for the stickies anymore :dizzy:
Just an A compulsive that's me

Why anyone would want to rush through a game is beyond me. Want to rush through something ? Get a Die Hard DVD.
