To be fair, beta or no, Steam still sucked when it launched and faced all the same complaints from people (myself included) that Origin is facing now. It's a completely different kind of platform to what it was in 2004.
That said, Origin definitely sucks in its current state and is actively a liability to the experience of any game that is released exclusive to it. Certainly Crysis 3 will never see a dollar from me if there's no Steam version - that isn't because Steam is great, it's just because Origin sucks and I don't want to be juggling DRM clients the same way we used to have to juggle IM clients in the bad old days.
In a perfect world, I'd like to see the a software delivery platform that's centralised, accessible, stable, and
overseen by a neutral third party with no stake in monopolising the market. Imagine that! Through torrents we already have the infrastructure for it, we'd just need publishers working together towards achieving something like that.
yeah steam was buggy for some, i never had an issue with it myself and ive had it from release, its alot better system then origin, yes is been around longer, however they had no one to copy ideas from, origin should of been able to make a far better product or at least the same ideas as steam.
Steam etc are amazing, for you old skool gamers, having to update hl1, TFC CS, quake, etc every few weeks with a manual patch, was a nightmare, specialy when you formatted, trying to get all the patches. Origin is OK, it just sucks the same games arnt on steam as its easier having everything in ONE place and one FRIEND list. they must be sacrificing some sort of % of game sales not having it on steam.....
