Eve is far more 'hard core' then WoW ever was yet its no where near as valuable IP.
Farmville and angry birds will never be hardcore, period.
So you're saying the people who spend 30+ hours a week in Farmville aren't hardcore gamers?
No, for the same reason that someone who sits down for 30 hours a week isn't a hardcore sitter.
Sitting and playing farmville are both casual/social activities, neither one requires complete attention or dedicated focus.
If they did then they wouldn't be "social" games. [also known as casual games, because anyone can do it, its not hard and doesn't require any great degree of skill or ability]
There are a multitude of games that require a 'hardcore' level of dedication to be at the apex of competition, but just playing one of those games a lot does not put you into the hardcore category, in the same way a game having people play it a lot does not put it in the hardcore category.
Go ask people who play games at competition level if they think someone playing farmville is a hardcore gamer.
They'll probably laugh at you until they realise you're serious.
Its like comparing someone who's taken a first aid course to an EMT and saying "its the same thing, right?".
or comparing playing go fish to Texas hold-em poker.
Just because someone decides to play go fish a lot doesn't make it a hardcore game, where as by comparison poker is a hardcore card game.
It requires a certain level of skill and dedication to be good at.
