Mellie's Random Game Discussion Thread

Played Stalker SOC for a bit yesterday, I was surprised at how good it looks for an older game tho that might be because of the complete mod, but it is pretty sexy for its age, like a cougar.. :D The shooting mechanics are teeeeerible though.

Why do you say that? This isn't about being a supersoldier with pinpoint aim... there's bullet drop and sway and impacts from breathing and so on.

Wait 'til you get a better weapon. Also, learnin to effectively use the PDA can really help.

Go anomoly hunting at night or search for stashes. The beauty of stalker is not just its story but the scary journey through the zone.

Like I said on Steam, it takes a few hours for it all to click in place.

I just don't have any feel for the aim at all, it doesn't feel natural - but maybe it's because I'm using the worlds oldest pistol.

So far I'm just wandering and following the quests, there is a tunnel that apparently the PDA tells me how to get through.. but it doesn't, so much for that idea! I also learned the hard way not to walk through an anomoly haha xD

I disagree with this as it has only gotten this complicated with time. Most Dota players I would imagine would have started playing when the game was less complicated than 'LoL' and probably had only a handful of characters in the game to learn but over the many years new features and champions were introduced adding to the complexity but because these changes trickled through over a long period of time Dota players didn't notice and were able to digest these changes easily because they didn't have to learn a thousand other things at the same time.

Essentially Dota players have gotten that learning curve that is needed, they just got it over a real long period of time as new features and champions were slowly introduced.

More or less any new Dota player has countless times more things to learn when they start for the first time than what any old Dota player needed to learn when they first started.

This. I'm a new DOTA player (MOBA in general is fairly wtf to me) and its **** confusing. Thankfully there have been a few helpful sods out there that have gone "OMFG Y U CHOOZ SNIPER HES NUB" and I'm slowly learning who and what not to do :).

Also the fact that you don't just choose your favourite every time is odd for me... I like consistency :P

I disagree, how far back are we talking here? Not everyone who played Dota started when it first come out. I only started playing in 2005, 2006 and it was well established by then. There was just as much stuff to learn back then as there would be now. Since I quit they have only added a few heroes.

Watching some of the most viewed games is a good way to learn if your not doing anything, watch a few games, watch how they play, what they buy ect. It really helps.

Good to see you giving the zone a go Disco! Remember, quicksave is your friend and due to the game's instability i always saved the game at main points along the way. Are you still in the cordon?

I just know that with each change of developer (Eul to Guinsoo and finally to Icefrog) each developer added a ton of new features creating a more complicated game. If a Dota player already knew the ins and outs of the previous game they would be able to more easily grasp new features and champions just as much as I am able to figure out any new champion in LoL quickly because I already know everything else about the game and am able to focus on learning just the single new thing.

Also don't underestimate how much more new champions add to the learning curve. It was quite a task to learn LoL when I started with only about 50 characters available. I can't imagine how new players feel with nearly 100 characters now there despite the base game for the most part not changing much.

yeah but honestly, it makes no difference. Its been that long since the dota settled down that anyone who'd been playing it before that happened has well and truly lost any advantage they might have had.

Advantage? All i'm talking about is the ease in which brand new players can learn the game. 2004 players didn't need to know nearly as much straight away about the game as 2012 players do. 2004 players only needed to know what was around then and then were eased into new mechanics over the years as they were introduced. 2012 players however need to know everything from 2004 as well as everything that had been introduced since as soon as they start playing.

/edit

Lone Druid it is! Finally had a win and I was playing Lone Druid so I think i'll stick with him while learning the rest of the game. The character himself unfortunately i'm pretty critical over. His abilities mostly revolve around stat gains which is pretty dang zzz. Also there's little reason to switch between bear form (as in switch a lot, you'd generally wanna pick one and stick with it as the different modes aren't diverse enough) as all that changes is that you go melee, get some extra damage, lose some speed, and gain another stat gain ability. Nidalee in League of Legends however gives you a completely new set of abilities that revolve around her becoming a Cougar.

On the other hand Lone Druid shows how a pure ranged to melee swap could work, Riot definitely need to take a look at that over the failure that is Kayle.

/edit 2

Not relevant to anything but I just noticed my post count to the left. What the fark?!?! Last time I checked I was around 5000. o_o

that's because you argue with me and everybody else so much lol.

and just curious, seeing as you didn't mention it you did summon the bear right? :P

I actually just came here to talk about dota 2 as well, just had an EPIC game with 3 mates playing as Dark Seer. He's a crazy support hero and not that difficult to get to grips with although his ulti + vacuum combo is kind of hard to pull off at times.

MW3 did not provide the goodness that MW2 did, it felt.... limp.

sigh, back to swtor and BF3 until D3... lulz.

also tips for shooting in stalker... get rid of the cross hairs and use iron sight. If your not aiming, you not shooting.

Also, buy a shotgun. Best friend of any stalker, especially semi auto's. Too many weird things happen to not have one.

You know you love it as much as I do. :P

YOU CAN SUMMON A BEAR?!?!?!?!?!? O_O LoL jk of course I knew of the bear, tis why I picked him. :P I called my bear Tibbers, have you seen him? <3

I was mainly interested in seeing more of the multi character controls but I ended up just having both selected and treating them as one unit. Interesting how you can give Tibbers items. It probably gives the character disgusting late game potential.

Also i'm divided on the secret shop, I get where the idea came from but probably the biggest thing that p!sses me off about it is that you can't buy normal items from it, only the special items. Also I think they need to better label what has to be bought at the secret shop.

Is Dark Seer the guy with the black hole ultimate? My friend was playing him.

yeah, well they do have little red s icons to indicate that and if you try to buy stuff from the secret shop without being there it makes it very obvious that you're doing it wrong lol. Realistically though there are only like 10-12 items or something that you have to buy from the secret shop so it doesn't take long to get them down.

You're thinking of enigma, Dark Seer has the wall of replicating death ulti :P

He has also got a vacuum spell which is somewhat similar to Enigma's black hole but obviously no where near as powerful.
