Modern Day Makeover: Bringing Old Games to New Life With Mods and Tweaks

Unread postby News Portal » 16 Apr 12, 11:42 am

We all like to reminisce about going to back to the old classics, but it can be hard - old games are ugly, and sometimes don't even work at all! But with so many sequels coming out this year, Jamie Dalzell has cracked open the vault to show you how to get the most out of Diablo 2, the original Borderlands, and our own GOTY 2011, Mass Effect 2.

I was at least expecting a mention of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Complete 2009 and the equivalent Oblivion mods…

Is funny you should do this article today, as I have just re-installed my old copies of Unreal(Gold) and Unreal Tournament(99) this morning, and was just searching for what options there are to "bring them to life" these days.. was such a nostalgic moment when I first fired up Unreal again and saw the main menu.

I installed that yesterday, and I've got to say it looks a lot better than I was expecting, and I'm pretty impressed by it.

The Complete mods for the S.T.A.L.K.E.R games have always been my all-time favourite makeover mods.
Steam: Shpleboy
Minecraft: LogicalHero
Battlefield 3: LogicalHero

Borderlands' FoV is locked at 70 by default, which may be perfect for a lounge-room television

just had to say well... its not really is it.

at a made up guestimate I'd say 99% of xbox or playstation owners own widescreen TV's and even for the guys on their old 4:3 CRT a 70 degree field of view is still more horrible than it is perfect.

the reason they lock it so low is so they don't need to render as much, for the console peasants :P

Ugh, that wasn't even to breathe new life into Borderlands, it was just to make it playable =p.

by far, was just playing call of pripyat then with the complete mod, get it! If you don't have stalker, do so and install these mods! You can die happily after that lol

heh I could write up a passable STALKER mod guide in the forums if anyone wants :P or even older games I've played recently that had a few modding options (V:tm-b, planescape torment, deus ex come to mind)

Also changing FOV in borderlands was so dodgy, using a vehicle would reset it among a few other things. Better than no fix though.
What can change the nature of a man?

While performance gains are one of the reasons a lower FoV is employed, you simply don't get the same nauseating claustrophobia. This is due to the higher ratio of viewing distance to screen size.

I actually hadn't thought of that, I guess that's actually kind of reasonable but if anything it highlights that games like that should be played on your computer not the TV :P

The stalker complete 2012 mod looks like its going to be so good. If anyone hasn't played stalker, either give the original mod or wait for that one. So pumped for release!
