Origin in my SimCity...that's one hell of a natural disaster!

I was so looking forward to SC5 too  one more game I'll be going without.

As for the other part of this discussion relating to the online to start the game bit. I doubt it would be too long before someone works out a way around it. The crackers out there seem to know what they're doing and nothing seems to have truly stumped them yet so I'd expect something to appear before too long. Steam doesn't bother me, it works well enough in offline mode to not bother me and if need be my phone will tether for basic internet access (albeit ****). For those of you who don't have a phone that tethers *cough*iphone*cough* then isn't it time you upgraded? Actually I have no idea if the iphone can tether these days, was glad to be rid of the one I had 2 years ago.

TLDR: Online to start shouldn't be a problem in majority of cases

I'll buy it. Love SC4 but with all the mods it's bit buggy now. Cities XL is nice but just doesn't hold up to Simcity. Can't wait for SC5. Always on doesn't bother me as my system and router are always on anyway and a quick check shows the last time it was off/disconnected was 31 days and 6 hours ago (and that was when I turned it off because of a thunderstorm). Before that, god knows how long I was connected for.

Fan of origin, no but I am a fan of the game. It could be annoying that their servers could be down for maintenance at the exact time I want to play the game but then that's what other games are for (as well as TV and movies) and even "going outside" if push comes to shove. :o

I was surprised to find that when I had no internet for a day (at a LAN) that all the games I tried worked with no internet even my steam games worked without hassles. That said I do not like the idea of having games that do not work without internet connection but in the odd situation I have no internet access for a week (has happened a few times in the last 5 years) I simply play STALKER as I get so immersed without distractions such as online IM chatting, forums or the ability to play MP games.

Went from a "will buy it anyway" (I *have* any always on internet connection) to "meh, I can live without it".

On that note, those of you who can't tolerate EA's Origin and online-only games should tap out early before you get excited about this: Yes, you will have to register an Origin account in order to play, and yes, you must be online (crossed out *at all times*) while playing in order to start playing. EA has confirmed that you will not be kicked out if your connection is interrupted. Moving on.

so it's still lame you can't play if you have no internet, but it's not as bad as kicking out.

skitz... it was already mentioned in the article. ;)

EA have reportedly touched base with Gamespy on the matter, if only to stipulate that if your internet connection drops out mid-game, you fortunately won’t be booted.

Off-topic, but that would indeed be a good discussion actually. One thing I like about Urban Terror is not only has it got a reasonably consistent user base still, but it harks back to the glory days of PC gaming where you are able to download and run a dedicated server yourself, rather than relying on servers run and controlled by the publishers or licensed third-party hosts. In effect, if there's still an interest in playing a MP game which no longer has support, you still CAN because you have the files to do so.

This.

Users should be able to play multiplayer if they wish, even if the publisher/dev doesn't want to support the game anymore.

As someone who just lost net for ~4 days, I still really don't care. This just isn't an issue to me, even with my terrible net. I literally have hundreds of games now all tied to an online account, and have had for years, and they sky still hasn't fallen, I still haven't "lost it all". It's fine.

Also, torrenting to stop DRM is idiotic. It's one of the primary reasons you HAVE DRM. Not that it will stop you guys doing it, and thinking yourselves the James-Che-Neo's of the internet, saving the world from DRM.

EDIT: Like it ain't no thang.

I can understand why people had the always on connections - me I barely care about it.

It's really not a work around for piracy anyhow, as the games can be tricked into thinking they are connected or just plain changed to not needing the connection.

I'm really not sure what they accomplish with this tbh.

It generally only takes crackers a day or 2 to crack this moronic DRM anyway. Even some games I pay for are using "edited" exe's because DRM pisses me off.

Yeah done that with a few games, ie legitimately purchased and then downloaded a crack to remove DRM. Not sure if that really sends a good message to the publishers though, it still convinces them that users will put up with DRM, whether you crack it or not. At any rate, it's an absolute pain when the DRM interferes with the game anyways. I remember having to download a crack to get my legally purchased CD copy of Dungeon Keeper 2 working. After EA tech support blamed everything bar the copy protection as to why the game wasn't working on my PC. When I told him how I fixed it he wasn't impressed.
