New router advice

Unread postby Sprocket- » 20 Mar 12, 10:57 pm

My 8 year old Dlink wirless is giving me the s***s and it's about dead!

Currently connect:

Ps3
iphone (usually just mine but occasionally friends use it)
laptop x 2
desktop (cat5)
my desktop (wirelessly)

Looking the Billion 7800N
http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?mai ... s_id=17067

or is it worth going for a dual band router for a little more?

edit: Wahh the asus is Cable-only..
The Asus RT-N56U has some good reviews.

Also - I'll need advice on which Wireless card to use for my desktop. Billion don't make their own..? Or are hard to find.

I have an Airport Extreme with Dual Band, and it's certainly worth the extra cash. Gives you the fastest wireless speed possible on devices that support 5GHz N, and still supports less capable devices.

I recently purchased one of these http://www.netgear.com.au/home/products ... N3500.aspx to replace my DG834G that died of old age (had to have been 4+ years old i think).

Very happy so far.

I'm glad it's not just me! Constant restarts to get the speed up and the ping down drive me crazy. I wouldn't get another Billion after the 7800n either. My Netgear DG834GU (ex Optus model with usb in for a HDD) was fantastic and I would plug it back in....if I could find it.

Also had a great run with D-Link routers.

Had the 7800n for ~1 month. Been nice to me so far after tweaking it within an inch of its life

7800N here. Great router after you update the firmware to something recentish if you get older stock.

if the billion is too much and you want a cheaper option i am running a TP Link TD-W8960N for about a year or so now and it has been excellent, a mate of mine recently picked up a billion and they go very hard but are pricey for a reason, i dont use the wired for much except to the TV, which leaves the wireless for the PS3/computer/laptop/phone, two devices downloading heavily at a time is ok and just noticable, but three or more can be a hassle if your gaming whilst another is streaming and another is downloading...

the current wireless adapter i use with it is a slightly modded TL-WN951N which has larger antenna for gain as i live in an old house... Its been ok, but does take some configuring...

Runs beautifully so far!
