Rumour: Valve to unveil 'Steam Box' Console at GDC

Unsubstantiated, yet intriguing rumours are now in play that suggest that Valve is currently working on creating its own gaming console.

'Sources' report that Valve is working on a hardware spec and associated software that would coalesce to form a 'Steam Box', a TV game console to be built by a variety of manufacturers. There's even a hypothetical tech spec, consisting of a Core i7 CPU, 8GB of RAM, and a NVIDIA GPU.

And it will run windows too! Oh wait, we have that... PC

If they can build this so it gets 1080p at 60fps minimum on all the games on steam with no stuffing around, i would probably buy one.

If the only benefit turns out to be i can plug it into my tv and still have to screw around with settings etc, i really would'nt see the point, i can already do that lol

You currently have it *because* its your normal option. Think if they released a Steam-box, with complete compatibility, where every game in their catalogue works without issue. All of a sudden you're faced with the 'Console vs Steambox' rather than 'Console vs PC' argument. Suddenly, your PC because naught but a Facebook machine.

THE FUTURE PEOPLE, THINK TO THE FUTURE!

You also have to remember that valve are *kinda* smart. I don't doubt they'll make it so its an upgradeable box for future-proofing. If they hit the mark correctly, they really could create something very new and very awesome.

If the "Steam Box" is just a PC that uses a custom windows based OS/Steam Based OS which is compatible with windows + a TV for a monitor then it would be good.

Having my PC games able to play anywhere, even on a TV would be handy, especially if games released for the Steambox could also be used on normal computers via steam. However, the chances of this concept being so cross platform friendly seems minor. so.. meh
