New Star Trek Videogame Will Bridge Events to Upcoming Movie Sequel

Unread postby News Portal » 13 Feb 12, 2:19 pm

[app=3365]Star Trek Online[/app] might have failed to set the MMO world on fire, but the next title to bear the Star Trek name might find itself more at home in the videogame arena. Choosing to focus on J.J. Abrams' action-packed series' revival, the new title is looking part Mass Effect and part Dead Space, with a little bit of Wing Commander thrown in for good measure.

Is it just me, or is the attached trailer just 3 seconds worth of an ESRB rating notice.

Fans fearful the game will tarnish the beloved franchise need worry not. The game's script has been written by [...] co-writers behind the 2009 film and its sequel.

Can't say I'm that much of a Star Trek fan... but wasn't the recent film a bit of a joke?

ROFL funny trailer. I am a heavy star trek fan and I did not hate the reboot, it worked well and satisfied many things from the original Star trek series.

Nah man, the recent film was bloody amazing (when compared to Star Trek: Nemesis)

I enjoyed the film but was horrified to see how emotional spock was. Hated all that stuff between him and 'uhura'. It was ridiculous.

New film was awesome. Faithful to the original stuff, but also accessible for non-fans.

Also, I assume this ends with Kirk and Spock kissing, right?

I loved the reboot, it was great! The franchise was in dire need of a refresh. I can't wait for the next movie.

I honestly would like another game like Legacy that had some proper QA on it, and a spit shine because the graphics had a lot to be desired. But its core mechanics were pretty good I felt, just let down by a poor story and a lack of checkpoints (or any save system) which led to some frustration with some really pain in the arse points in the game.

Not bad for inhouse pre-alpha footage... Im kinda hoping they bumped the gameplay speed up a bit in the vid tho.. cause I couldnt even see what they were shootin at... and totally would have pancaked into whatever it was in space they flew past at 1000+kph.

I'm not exactly a Star Trek 'fan' so to speak, but I enjoy watching it every now and then. But every person I know that I would class as a fan loved the reboot.

That said I did also really enjoy the reboot a lot, but mainly because I'm a special effects junkie. Am also hanging out for this next one.

If the game can compare at all to the old Star Trek FPS I'll probably get that too.

You may want to look into Star Trek Excalibur, it's being made by some of the old Bridge Commander modders, they're making good progress.

I little OT, but it really is a shame to see that almost the entire gaming industry has stalled when it comes to improvements in graphics in the last few years. This doesn't look bad, by any stretch, but it also doesn't look much different to how it would have looked 3-4 years ago, which is a shame.

Certainly, graphics are not everything - gameplay must come first - but it's still nice to see things move ahead. Even in the ME3 trailers I watched yesterday the graphics are starting to look a little stale (facial features, etc). Bring on the next generation of consoles. I don't plan on getting one but at least that will kick developers into gear again - the current gen are hobbling development so much right now. :?

I am definitely a Trek fan and I also enjoyed the new reboot - I will definitely go see the next movie when it is released! - but I don't see much in this that makes me say "wow". I'm getting more picky as I get older on what games I play - I just don't have the time that I used to. This is alpha footage, so I'll take it with a grain of salt, but so far it has yet to convince me I should part with my cash (and time) to play it. :)

Yeah I have seen that, but I haven't been able to find any good videos that showcase it. Do you have any linkies? :P

Here's their youtube channel, the graphic render vids are pretty impressive. You can also check out their news feed. You can also download the model viewer, comes with the a few models to show off their engine and texture work, don't have the link for that on hand though.

There's really not that much more to be squeezed out of the current consoles, and even to take it to the limit needs a $100 million budget, which no one is going to put in for a Star Trek game.
