Selling car to dealer

Unread postby Cel » 24 Jan 12, 2:32 pm

Hi guys,

I'm going overseas for a few months and need to sell my car asap, so I was thinking of selling it to a dealer. I don't really know much about cars or selling cars so I was looking for some advice.

Where should I go? I was thinking to just drive around Parramatta rd. and go to a few of them and ask for a price. Are they open on Sunday? (Busy all week)

Parramatta local here, most are open on weekends but don't expect the best money back. If you're not trading they generally try to screw you over... we're talking 70-80% less than what you'd expect. You might get lucky, but it's somewhat unlikely :-/

If you have the ability, get a family member to help out, one of my old work colleagues gave the car to her sister and got her to sell it on her behalf.

Also, had no experience with them, but on Sunnyholt Road (Blacktown) there's a place called webuyanycar.com.au which one would assume, they buy any car :P

I do have a family friend who's coming with me on Sunday to help me with it, and he knows more about things than I do, but even he doesn't really know where to go.

By the way, it's a 2000 Mitsubishi Magna Solara, v6 3.5 automatic with a fair few scratches and bumps. What would be the approximate price range that I could get?
webuyanycar.com.au says my car is worth $1650  if that's true, I don't thinkg it's really worth selling it..

A dealer will give you SFA, regardless of what the car is actually "worth", they'll give you less than rock bottom price wise.

Selling car to dealer

If you can sell it privately, do so.

As mentioned a car yard will give you a pittance for it.

Yeah, thinking twice about selling it now. I will need my car when I come back, and if I'm only going to get like 1k for it, it might not be worth it. My car is worth more to me than 1k.

Now the question is, if I'm going to leave my car alone for 3 months, what should I do to keep it safe and running again when I come back? Taking the battery out seems to be the obvious thing, but what else?

You see though major sellers can't give certain guarantees on cars > 9 years old (in NSW at least) so there is an even further drop in value from them due to the risks they have to employ.

In short, you're pretty much boned.

Cel: A car sitting doing nothing for months on end is bad, is there someone that can use it?

Not really, but there is someone who can turn it on every now and then. Is that any better? She can't drive it, but I can ask her to turn it on every couple of weeks and sit in it for a few minutes?

I'd at least get her to run it for 10-20 minutes every few days just to keep everything flowing.

The price range of the Magna is about 4 to 5 grand privately. And there are a heap for sale in NSW so you most likely wont get a quick sale. (Unless you sell it cheap)

If you do decide to keep it, all you need to do is disconnect one lead of the battery for it not to go flat. You should start the car every week or two (A few mins will be fine) but honestly if you leave it for 3 months, you should be ok.

Just for clarification, 99% of Redbook's private sale prices are highly inaccurate.
