I have to admit, I pretty much only wash my hands when I'm at work or after I take a dump. Most of the time I don't even use the toilet to take a leak, I just go outside, light up a smoke and use a tree.

A question though. How many of you wash the taps on the basin when you wash your hands? It's something I've always done, especially in a public toilet. Consider the fact that whoever has turned that tap on has touched with with their hands they consider dirty, then turn it off without thinking they just touched it with their **** hands and basically transferring the germs back to their hands.

I'd say that says less about greater social mores, and more about the class of person you mix with, TBH.

There's a great difference between reported and observed behaviour.

Many people don't wash their hands at all and MOST people don't wash their hands properly.

Filthy Canberrans...
Despite nearly all respondents (98%) in the Newspoll research recognising the correct method of washing hands with soap and water and drying thoroughly they may not be not necessarily putting that knowledge into practice.

In an observational study of 200 people washing their hands in the public toilets of a food hall carried out on 11 October 2002 only 20% of females and 7% of males observed used the correct procedure of washing their hands for at least 10 seconds, rubbing soap all over their hands, rinsing and drying for 10 seconds with a clean towel or 20 seconds with a hand dryer. 8% of females and 29% of males failed to wash their hands at all after going to the toilet.

Mucky Poms...
Researchers tested skin samples from 409 people waiting at bus stops outside five train stations.

They found that 27 per cent had a particular bacteria* on their hands - a sign that they had not washed with soap after a trip to the lavatory.

*E. Coli - named in other sources

Dirty Yanks...
2003 Back to 50’s Car Show Event—64% females washed and 30% males
2003 State Fair—65% females washed and 39% males
2004 State Fair—75% females washed and 51% males

Good news
Hand washing is becoming more common - the best hand washing from the Canberra study was noted in young children - and other studies show increasing rates of hand washing over time.

Bad news
Pretty much all of this article...

seriously people, at least make an effort to wash your hands

its not about personal hygiene, if u wanna be coverd in poop then thats fine, but dont go spreading it around

on the topic of toilet use. Im not so much concernd about the shoe prints on the seat, but more so when someone demolishes a toilet and leaves it unflushed or just poop coverd. (TAFE SA, good lord...)

in what coutry is this acceptable?!

also, i refuse to poop in public/work toilets. ill hold it all day if i have to
makin new sig. brb

I piss and wipe with my right, i activate the tap with my left.
But this poses and interesting question for those that do not follow my lead or follow in the opposite manner.

ROFL this thread is funny.

Germs are less likely to spread through non-porous hard surfaces like stainless steel taps and door handles. I'd rather people at least make the effort to wash their hands in public restrooms rather than use the excuse that "oh it's supposedly pretty dirty anyways". Well guess who makes it dirty? People who don't wash their hands!!

Seriously, would you expect the person who prepares your food, your doctor or your dentist to wash their hands???

Sorry Ralph the figure for those professions aren't any better...

Doctors are some of the worst spreaders of disease and infection because they don't wash hands properly or often enough. 57% washed their hands when they should - while they KNEW they were being watched...
http://www.annals.org/content/141/1/I-38.full

Australian figures over a number of reporting periods since 2009 show rates as low as 46% - current average 72% - Nurses have the highest compliance rate - doctors usually the worst.

Food prep is VERY variable depending on the business and how well people have been trained - I've seen good, bad and misinformed all in the same shop - eg somebody wearing gloves while preparing food, but moving between food types and also taking money without changing gloves.

Just to keep the worries high - next time you get touched or searched by somebody who feels it necessary for THEIR safety to wear gloves - you might want to ask if the gloves are clean - or have been used on somebody else.
