A lot of America's federal powers are exercised at state level here.

I didn't know that, so I guess that shows it can work.

however, my point was more about the influence that corporations have on legislation in America, and I feel that without proper regulation, (that half of congress wouldn't be willing to support) state level enforcement would be easier to influence.

I would like to see a big effort put into removing the money from politics. the Republican party is certainly not in the best shape, especially recently with the tea party starting to splinter off, but getting rid of the money might fix some other problems. honestly, they probably both need to be done, but I really can't see it happening for a while.

Well I wouldn't exactly call the Commonwealth libertarian. We have a much different political structure, and a more socialist approach.

But states rights has been a significant influence on the development of Australian politics. Though it would be different in America because they have a completely different attitude to government support.

I was going to say that. some looked really awkward.

I still can't believe that actually exists. what were they thinking? I just... don't understand.

it would make complete sense if it wasn't done by his campaign, and was done to make fun of him. that's how bad it is.

I think the doomsday clock just ticked backwards a bit, as Bachmann's dropped out of the race after getting only 5% in Iowa.

I hope, just hope, that the American people can see this right-wing Tea Party **** is a joke not only to their own country but also on the international stage.

But I'm not holding my breath.

I'm not even sure we'd see many of those positions advocated by the eventual nominee, simply because after they've lurched to the right to win the nomination, they'll have to lurch back to the centre in order to have a shot at competing in the general election. It truly is a bizarre process.

now it's Santorum's turn!

this guy seems to be a fairly heavy social conservative. spoken out about gay marriage plenty of times, as well as wanting to ban pornography (apparently).

Nah, she dropped out because everyone was laughing at her queen of a husband, in the words of Joe Rogan: "if that guy were to randomly throw his hands in the air, glitter would appear from nowhere and fly all over the place, he's fabulous".
