since this isn't a priority for the government, it unfortunately has to go through the usual policy process which is sloooooooooooooooooow :(

This is classic political manoeuvring.

Those at the OFLC are no doubt trying to justify their existence, by wasting our tax dollars holding committee after committee about the issue.

The government will keep this on the back-burner until they are needing a distraction from a embarrassing event, or a boost in popularity, then suddenly they'll pop it out at a convenient time, and trumpet it across the land, citing how they listened to the people and gave them what they wanted.

at this point in time, is anyone really still surprised by anything the government says/does in relation to this long-standing issue?

i'm not really bothered because i tend to import most of my games from online uk distributors, where they usually have an 18+ pegi label slapped on them anyways...

Kind of expected. Legislation. Parliament. These things take time. Just be thankful the ball is actually rolling this time.

In the meantime, import your games.

I agree... these things take time and it's expected. It's how government works. Industry needs to keep lobbying to make sure groups like the ACL have their cries drowned out.
but..
I do not agree with that GON article basically asking people to screw over Australian retailers due to price fixing. That's such a **** thuggish attitude to have. The only people that you end up screwing over are Australians that work at these retailers that lose their jobs... the publishers will not give a **** that if don't buy from them.

But first - just one more public survey about attitudes toward R18+ and the possible psychologically detrimental effects of "interactive" 18+ness - no gamers need apply.

If the government were putting a tax on 18+ classification it would of be pushed through months ago.
