Notch and Bethesda to Duke it Out in Court

Unread postby News Portal » 28 Sep 11, 11:01 am

Oh dear. It seems that Minecraft creator Markus ‘Notch’ Persson’s novel suggestion that he and Bethesda settle their legal dispute over the use of the “Scrolls” name via a few games of Quake III didn’t go down too well. In fact, it didn’t go down at all. Rather than win muchos gamer-points by accepting the cheery challenge, Bethesda have engaged corporate mode and now the ongoing battle is off to the courts.

I really can't imagine Bethesda winning this, I hope notch enjoys his Bethesda funded trip to court.

I am curious about how this is supposed to hold up in court. I've seen long threads about Skyrim with no mention of scrolls, either the Elder variety or the normal ones.

As far as I'm concerned Bethesda's games are Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim, not The Elder Scrolls. Silly Bethesda.

Still not sure why Bethesda/lawyers are pursuing this. There's not really any similarities between the two.

Still not sure why Mojang don't just change the name. It's a pretty uninspiring name anyway and if it's going to bring lawyers down on them, is it worth sticking to it? They've better things to do!

I think it's the precedent that it'll set. If Bethesda are acknowledged to have a legitimate claim that the borrowing of one word is trademark violation, then we'll get every other major developer suing for names - see that Rise of Nightmares ad to the side? The title is similar to Rise Of Nations... MICROSOFT LAWSUIT. Et cetera.
We both said a lot of things that you're going to regret.

Even if someone just called something 'rise,' sheesh, this really is an odd one.
