I bought duel 470s and the next day the 580 was available from the store... i contacted them but my system had shipped :(. the 470 SLi is powerful, but i think i could have sacrificed some performance for a single card with better temps and such.

cheers dudes/dudettes!

I don't reckon noob is relevant to the low end machine. It's more a case of cash available over experience in some cases, and some just want to play Bejewelled, etc.
Go the Base / Recommended / High-roller, or stick with traditional - Budget / Casual / High End (High Roller is to the point as well).

Anyone considering an upgrade should seriously consider getting a Gigabyte 6 series mobo. Gigabyte have just released a BIOS update that gives them native PCIe 3.0 and 22nm CPU support.

2x 560 Ti or 1x 580? About the same price but I would imagine the 2x 560 Ti would perform substantially better than the single card.

Considering the performance benefit of the 560ti's, vs the 580, the 560 will out perform it, but like SLI systems there are a few things to keep in mind.

2 mid range cards now mean two mid range cards until you up to the next generation, yes you might be able to overclock them, but the difference will be in the limitations of the gpu. Sli cards only clock as fast as the weakest card can handle. Heat and power on Sli systems is also another factor to consider, along side noise.

The 580's out in different flavors would be well worth looking into, personally having done the sli route, the buying in at midrange now is pretty good, but i'm more of the mind buying the best you can afford then whacking in a second is a bit more feasible and reasonable, especially if you have a psu you are doubting.

I'm looking at these cards for SLI, I have an Antec Quattro 850w from my previous build.

Noise shouldn't be an issue, I'm already running a HD4870 which is noisy. Heat also shouldn't be an issue, my case is an Antec 1200 with 8-10 fans running. I would like your opinion though.

Look at threads here for various current setups, a few people have just gotten new systems. Also check here and here.

Even Trustfund baby's have budgets.

Does he/she want the whole system, monitors mice keyboards box headphones etc, or just the box?

Uber spec or just high-spec?

computer/hardware knowledge enough to tinker, or just wants a box that lets him/her game?

Moar info.

Updated:

Mobo change, ASRock have a 3yr warranty fr the $20 increase over the Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 which i was umming and ahing over, it has more with it, more features and over all the $20 is justified moving to the ASRock. For the Asus HATERs, ASRock are part of the ASUS CORP. but not under Asus anymore, and they are quickly building a solid reputation for motherboards with the features and price points not offered by other 'premium' and standard manufacturers. Layouts a little different, but the pricepoint/features makes it a bang for buck board.

Also Z68 is now the market dominant, it has more features for the user as what p67 and H67 did which is better over all, so no more of those, i will be removing the options from the 'Hiddens' later on, and updating them specing for Z68.

the SSD edition.

Yea i know...

Crucial M4 won out over the early malfunctions of the Sandforce controlled OCZ Vertex3 and the Corsair Force3. Both are speedy drives, but product recalls on the Corsair and the bsod havok on the OCZ drives makes the Micron Controlled Crucial drive look good, especially since its 'direct' competition comes it at a higher market point (intel 510/samsung SSD's)

For those looking at storage, 2Tb drives are coming in under $100, the SSD is going to be your main drive and considering the price point (240) and the performance gained its about on par with the other component's your speeding the same amount on (GPU/CPU/MOBO) Yes it raises over all cost, but other things have gotten cheaper.

The 560Ti is still there, i'm hazard to move it for fear of looking into a modified 570, but if i went up a GPU price bracket it would drop the SSD from the lineup. :)

Lastly this is a tentative Z68 BF3 build, it meets minimum spec, but if your looking to go this build, hang out a few days or until launch as its based of the Beta impressions and Forum feedback. If anything i would spec up RAM and move to a 580, and probably spec down to a GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 for a bit of cost saving.

Thoughts?

If it's value aimed I'm not sure going the Extreme4 mobo over the Extreme3 is worth it. You're paying $45-ish more for 2 more SATA3/USB 3.0 ports (4 instead of 2 of each) and an extra PCIe 2.0 x16 slot. None of which're terribly necessary when considering the other components.

Hmm good point, the Extreme 3 cuts it down a bit, and puts it under the UD3H's price point.

Looses SATA6 marvell ports, and bay adapter for USB3, but lower price point may allow for better gpu...

hmmm, will look see...
