Police have impounded five Skylines for 28 days and reported the drivers for driving offences following an investigation into the six-car race last month.
It is alleged that just after midnight on Saturday, May 21, six Nissan Skylines raced at speeds of up to 143km/h in the 90km/h-zone downtrack of the tunnels on the South Eastern Freeway.
Once of the cars' passengers posted footage of the race on YouTube, which tipped off police to the incident. Traffic Support Branch Officer in Charge, Superintendent Linda Fellows, said the YouTube footage was used along with vision from Transport Department cameras in the tunnels to net five of the six cars involved.
"If people are going to video their driving behaviour and put it up in a forum where police can find it, (and) if people want to give us the evidence, we will certainly follow it up," she said.
A Nailsworth man, 22, and a West Beach man, 34, were both reported for driving at a dangerous speed of not less than 143km/h, misusing a motor vehicle and speeding. A Klemzig man, 21, was reported for misusing a motor vehicle and exceeding the speed limit at a speed of not less than 128km/h.
Another Nailsworth man, 21, and a Rosewater man, 22, were each reported for misuse of a motor vehicle.
The video vision shows the six cars racing in two lines of three through the tunnels.
The footage also shows one of the vehicles - the one yet to be found - changing lanes late to pass a slow-moving vehicle.
"It's incredibly dangerous. Anything could've happened in that particular incident; anything could've gone wrong," Supt Fellows said.
"Fortunately on this occasion, there hasn't been a death or serious injury."
Supt Fellows said if the drivers committed a second serious driving offence within 12 months, their cars could be lost or crushed.
Police are appealing for public help to track down the sixth Skyline involved in the incident.
The high-speed race follows an incident late last year, where three skateboarders were filmed going at 90km/h through the Heysen Tunnels.
