It wont be an expansion as such. That will be the integration of Dust 514 and Eve Online. Whether it ends up that way or not is still to be seen. But honestly if it works, CCP is gonna get a lot of publicity for it as im not aware of any other developer doing anything like it.

I was under the impression the next expansion adds walkable stations and captains quarters, slowing progressing towards planetary combat? Or did I read into something wrong?

You are thinking of Incarna yes. It will be a step towards the integration with Dust 514. But the combat on the planet is going to be the domain of Dust 514, unless thats been changed.

Long story short: CCP will weave some server magic on their end to make it all fit together.

Also, I thought that I might add that the entire audience at Fanfest basically chanted "**** YEA" and demanded that they replay it when they showed it.

agreed. as long as i get to show how much vastly superior PCs are by blowing the hell out of consolers i'll be quite happy with this expansion
