I didn't find Risen 1 very buggy, even with the original retail release. I played through the whole game with the 1.0? version, and don't remember coming across any real bugs.
Then you're very fortunate. I've come across several bugs. I can't read any writing on letters, notes, scraps of parchment, etc. There are several graphics bugs, one of which can occur at random times and really messes with you when it happens in the middle of a fight. The worst bugs are the broken quests.
Risen is an open world, so you'd expect the game to be fairly robust about what order you do quests in, and allow you to think outside the box without breaking the game and having to reload a save game from 6 hours ago. It manages to do this most of the time, but the few times it breaks is painful. There are no community tools to edit the quests, and the developers still haven't fixed them a year after release [I played Risen several months ago for the first time], so it doesn't look like they'll ever be fixed.
It is surprisingly easy to be 'stuck' between factions [bandits/rogues, keep/mages, inquisition/spellswords] and unable to progress in the game. None of the game's factions will recognise you as belonging to them, and you can't be accepted by any of them. Deep Silver's official response to this situation [and every other quest bug] is: whelp, hope you archived your old saves.
Save games are another problem with Risen. Deep Silver recommends that you save frequently, don't overwrite old saves, and keep those save files in case you have to revert due to bugs. Unfortunately, once you get near 100 save files [pretty easy to do], the save systems start to slow down dramatically. Get 150+ and it's crawling. Creating a save with that experience is just painful. The only solution I've found is to move my old saves to another folder and archive them.
With all of that belly aching out of the way, Risen is an awesome game and very recommended. The combat system is brutal and far superior to the typical Bethesda offering.
