Nostalgia

Unread postby RedZombie » 17 Feb 11, 2:24 pm

I was doing a road trip today and just thinking about all the cool stuff I had/wanted when I was younger, and finally got around to thinking about the PC/PS1 Games my friends and I used to LAN with.. I don't think I miss the games per say, but I miss the enjoyment I got out of them at the time.

Age of Empires 2
Starwars Rebellion
Starwars X-Wing Alliance
Syphon Filter
MechWarrior Games

Man speaking of Starwars Rebellion.. I wish I knew where to get a copy now. I remember when I first heard of it there were no PC Stores and Harvey Norman was the best place to get PC games.. took me months to get it!

I remember rebellion, I had so much fun muliplayering that with a friend from school. It won't run on windows 7, I've tried (or at least it won't run on 64 bit windows 7)

It's kinda sad that 15 years from now 20 somethings are going to be saying "Back when I was a young child we had this awesome game called Modern Warfare".

Sadly LucasArts has discontinued these two games and won't re-release them, not even to GOG.com or Steam. You can find copies of them on Amazon and EBay but they tend to be overpriced due to their extreme rarity. I'm afraid that really leaves you with one last choice which I can't discuss here.

I really wish they'd go ahead and rerelease them, same goes with the entire Xwing and TieFighter series. Oh and Rebel Assault! that was an awesome series.

Best thing about SWRebellion was that Chewie, Ackbar and Lando could all be Jedis :D.

That sucks.. I was just looking it up on Gamespot and they gave it a really poor rating.. while it was difficult to get into the interface at first it didn't take long to figure out really.

Had some epic matches there..if I could grab it on Steam for a decent price, I definitely would.

I remember my good old tactical games that I loved:

Rainbow Six (and RS:Black Thorne)
Ghost Recon
Delta Force (1, 2, Task Force Dagger)
Commandos 2 (which I recently found and bought!)
Operation Flashpoint (the only one that continued to be awesome/exist, despite a name change).

Ah, if only those titles got continued, some really awesome stuff could of come of them by this stage :(

Makes me want to cry, what are we letting kids these days grow up in?

I distinctly remember these titles. Not because I thought they were any good, in fact I thought they were utter ****. I just remember them because I hated them THAT much.

Clearly not a fan of the thinking persons shooter :P

Used to love seeing a 3 hour plan come perfectly together in 3 minutes of action with RS. Then I tried Vegas and almost broke down in tears.

Rainbow Six and Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear were one of the best strategy first person shooters I've played. Awesome games.

Bah, try going back to Tie Fighter and the first Dark Forces.

I think I've got an old copy of Rebellion floating around...it was a pretty tough game to master, and I especially hated the random disaster events which destroyed your structures. But I looooved building sector fleets, individually naming Star Destroyers and invading new systems with a fleet of 2x Super Star Destroyers, 10 Star Destroyers and a ton of support ships. Oh, and including an Interdictor Cruiser to stop the hopelessly outnumbered Rebels from running away :D

I actually managed to hold onto my copy of star wars rebellion until last year where it's gone MIA. I'm certain it's in the pile of junk i've got in my room (played it heaps last year). I spent countless hours playing it. I actually found it up in the late 90's whilst my dad was looking for PC parts in one of those tiny PC shops that happened to have like 1 or 2 shelves of games.

 Really that's a shame. I was considering getting a new PC sometime this year and putting Windows 7 on it (Rebellion runs fine on XP at the moment).

I should back up my statement by saying that I was about 11-years-old. Strategy wasn't at the forefront of my interests. :P

Maybe I should see if they're laying around somewhere. I might enjoy them now.

Rebel Assault and Jedi Powers? Maybe it was Dark Forces... and Tie Fighter of course on the PC brings back memories. We PC gamed a little until we got a console :P

So does Monster Truck Madness, and the original Need For Speed. And of course Doom 95 :P We didn't have a console until 1998 (PlayStation), we weren't very well off. My cousin had a Sega, and my dad had a NES that we played every now and then. I wasn't allowed to play anything unless I asked first. By 2000 onward this had all changed though.

I am 23 this year.

Stunts, Doom, Wolf3D, Commander Keen and Duke Nukem (the side scrollers) hold some of the fondest memories. Me and my mates used to get stoned and sit around multiplaying adventure games, all the classics. Police Quest, Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle. Leisure Suit Larry were the most often played adventure games lol.

I also have some fond memories of playing Alex the Kidd on my master system with my sisters. Playing Pitfall on my mate's 7500 or Space Invaders on my 2600. Blasting through the first 2 Sonics on my megadrive. Mario all the way through to 64. Killer Instinct. Learning the fatalities then having a mate purposefully lose so we could see all the characters. Spending hours waiting for the dude to pop up and say Toasty lol.

So many memories. I'm 29, turning 30 this year. I've been playing video games for about 23 of those years lol.
