I bought BF2 yesterday as part of the Steam sale (yay for cheap games) but I have a problem with the key binding.

I want to have the right mouse button as my forward key and X as my backwards key. However, when I try to set up one of these keybinds in the options menu, the other keybind unbinds itself making it unusable ingame.

Bind right mouse button to forward = backwards keybind disappears.
Bind X to backwards = forward keybind disappears.

Anyone know what's causing this and is there a fix?

Why the hell would you want right mouse button for your forward motion, but hey each to there own.

You need to setup the other key to do something else, you can only have multiple keys if you are going from infantry to into a vehicle.

With BF2 the game has preset keybinds you cannot change unless you redo the config file, same when I started playing it I had to redo stuff as some things I had on numpad and the game wouldn't do it.

I think that's what your asking. :pensativo:

First off, the game is from Steam so it's already up to date.

@ Slayer
The problem is that whenever I do one bind, the other bind disappears from the screen as if I'd cleared it. If it was a duplicate keybind issue I'd get an error saying "key already found in <control section> - can't rebind" rather than the issue I'm getting.

This occurs on all control sections (common, land vehicle, plane, chopper and boat).

I seem to have derailed my own topic. Can a mod split the controls issue and related discussion off into another topic please?

It sounds like you need to click Apply on the bottom of the menu tab before switching tabs from inf vehicle etc: that way the setting should stay, it's been that long since I used BF2, then again I back up profile so once done you never have to worry.

You could also try deleting the profile folder and redo it from logging into the game, or do a reinstall of the whole game maybe.

Done topic split. ;)

I just did a reset of all my controls and it's still doing the same thing.

I have found out that if I set S to forward and X to back then both controls will stay. However, if I set right mouse to forward again, the back control unbinds itself immediately without any action on my part.

I might have an idea as to what is going on.

If you edit the controls.con file to manually change key bindings etc. you should find a line similar to:

ControlMap.addKeysToAxisMapping c_PIThrottle IDFKeyboard IDKey_W IDKey_S 0

This looks like it controls forward and backward movement on the land. I assume that this means going forwards and backwards while not in a vehicle too. It also looks like since they've done it as a 'throttle', it means the one config entry controls forwards and backwards in the one line. Since you can only choose one input device, in this case IDFKeyboard, you cannot map it to use both the keyboard and the mouse. This is different from most FPS games i've played where forward and backward have their own separate lines.

They may have done it this way due to requiring vehicular controls.

Maybe there is a way around it, someone else may know - I don't even own the game so I can't test anything for myself :(

Good luck.

So in other words, EA's retarded programming strikes again.

Guess I shouldn't have expected anything less from them.
