regarding patching to cataclysm?

so i haven't played wow for awhile and im getting my client ready for cataclysm
however after reinstalling and chucking cata on as well i find that the blizz downloader wants me to get 4.5gbs

Am i doing something wrong by running the 5gb patch then installing cata? or is there any other way to get said patches?

^^This. Downloading the 5 GB patch on top of a lich kig client is essentially giving you the cata client . To be able to play the cata content like archeology, golbins, worgens, lvl 85 etc, you then just have to register your cata game code on your battlenet account.

Removing the old install (keeping the addons and WTF folder to maintain addon info etc) and putting in cata, will, as Roger said, just need a couple of relatively small patches - hotfixing a few things.

arg i tried installing just from cata and was hit with a 6gb download....it wont let me use the 4.5gb patch? am i missing something here?

got hit with the same **** setting WoW up for my brother.
I mean what the hell?
I update wrath with the disk and and all the executable patches off the file mirror to 4.0.1's second build and them bam, down loader tells me I need 6.7 gigabytes.
For **** sake on WoW's web site under installation guide it says it should be around 800 meg. so not only does the damn thing take forever to install now it takes forever to update.
