So you've met the companions...

I'm curious as who was your favorites and who you avoided like they had a bad case of the crabs.

I'm hesitant from selecting who my favorites are as I'm yet to meet Lily, Raul and I really haven't used any as a sidekick except for ED-E and Boone, but it's not really fair to ask for people's opinions without giving your own.

ED-E... Don't get me wrong, Enhanced Sensors is awesome. ED-E's 'Warning' music before they engage in combat isn't awesome. I appreciate the alert to let me know something's behind me, but the sound itself is annoying. I wonder if there's a mod for that. I'm not sure what to take for the Enhanced ED-E though, +8 DT from 0 DT or the weapon upgrade which is suppose to be +5 DAM, +8 DPS, +.5% Crit Chance, +15 Crit Damage.

Boone is awesome in combat, but I understand that's because of a bugged Guns skill. The opposite problem of what Veronica has (fixed level) where the Guns skill goes past 100.

Anyway, I might have more thoughts at a later date. Who did you pick up? Who made New Vegas that much more enjoyable with them at your side, whether it was with conversation or with combat?

Veronica is number one in my book. I got her Pushy (unique fist) and when she punches something there is a big blue ring that comes out of it. She's amazing and it is so much fun to watch her punch the living **** out of something.

I've met Lily but I'm not a fan of mutants anyway and she comes off as a bit to annoying for me.

Boone is pretty good but unless you have a mod for him for his ammo, giving him an alternate weapon and ammo means he just chews through it. Things that bug me with him is I gave him a silenced modded sniper and when he fires it is not silenced at all. Take it back and the silencer is there and it shoots as you would expect, give it back to him and it becomes unsilenced again..

Cass is pretty good too. Nothing really stands out except she is good with a shotty. I gave her the dinner bell and she is lethal with that.

Raul, well I hardly have him as a companion as I would rather keep Veronica but the times I did use him he seemed ok.

Gannon/'Chuck' I found ok, nothing special but he is needed to help the Remnants and to get their armor.

EDE - I don't mind his music thing actually but I find the Enhanced sensors more annoying. Oh there is someone just over that rise, go over the rise and its actually someone further away. I found it annoying to judge distances so I would rather not have it. Plus you need to mod out his invisible legs to stop him from tripping off mines.

Rex - meh, so I pretty much just go and get him fixed and then send him back home to The King.

I'm just up to the Vegas series of quests and have only met Boone.

He's awesome.

Should I have met more companions by now?

You should have passed ED-E and Veronica in your travels, if you went via Primm and the Trading Post 188.

I'm not in a real rush to meet Lily. Her perk does nothing for me as I rarely use Stealth Boys and as you said Bickety, not a fan of the mutants, although I do have a soft spot for Fawkes and Uncle Leo. Whether I become a fan of her depends on her dialogue.

Same goes for Raul. Again, it will depend on dialogue whether I like or loathe Raul, but his perk could be quite useful as I did take Built To Destroy.

I did briefly pick up Rex to try and complete his quest, but I encountered some crashes while having him in my companion slot, so I reloaded from a previous point and have avoided picking him up for now.

That's really disappointing to hear that Boone + silenced sniper = loud sniper rifle. I get the feeling that it was intentional to let you know combat was going on, but I'm hoping there's a mod to fix that.

Veronica is pretty awesome as she gives some great close range defense options.

That said, I don't really like her RP wise. Her end game options mostly consist of
Hidden: show
**** you I'm going to run off by myself
, which is crappy.

So my favourite is Cass as if you have the Cherez La Femme Perk she suggests she'll sleep with you if you get her drunk enough. :dodgy: And she has a great selection of guns to use. Brush Guns are pretty great. And can tear through stuff at close range, which compliments any guns character. Boone is OK but sucks at close quarters which is where a companion is needed most. So Boone = **** imo.

For non-human companions, I really like EDE has his sensor perk is great with a silenced sniper rifle - nothing gets near me to even activate his battle music. And when it does activate it cracks me up. Especially with the Mysterious Magnum I use for close range defense as that plays music too.

Boone - He was handy when I first played the game, but if you give him a better rifle you're constantly having to give him ammunition because he fires it off like it's New Years in Palestine. Some interesting dialogue moments, and if you're got a grudge against the Legion, he's your man. I made the mistake of taking him near Cottonwood Cove, he went nuts and started shooting up the place.

Lily - For someone who is supposed to be stealthy, she wouldn't shut up. She was pretty handy for sneak attacks, when I played a melee/unarmed killer though.

Cass - I've had her as a long term companion once, and made the mistake of putting 50 sticks of dynamite into her pack. That didn't end well. She normal ends up with a nasty fate if she teams up with me in the storyline.

Arcade - Again, only have tried him once, just for story purposes.

Veronica - Rather punch people myself then have her run off or get stuck somewhere and then mysteriously come running from the distance to rejoin me.

Raul - With Raul, I've only managed to find him after I've played a little while and I've got my skills up, so I really don't need his talents.

ED-E - Tried him a few times, found the music annoying after the 20th encounter.

Rex - I have used Rex a few times now, he doesn't talk much and he's a handy sidekick. But he likes to run off and attack thing.

Shame you can't just have a brahmin and leave him tied up at the gate or something.

pretty much ditto to peoples thoughts on boone and ed-e. i got sick of boone going through 100 5.56mm round every encounter with a mole rat, and i also got sick of him and ed-e killing everything. i'm high enough level to not care about the extra carry space, and can handle everything on my own, so i told them to stay at my house. fortunately i still get the perks, which are awesome. long range sensors and having enemies light up in scope is so good with a sniper. sooo good. love shooting heads off at such a big distance the ground textures around the enemies haven't loaded fully.

how often does ed-e die? if i had access to the upgrade choice, i would choose damage as ed-e never really died for me.

only other companion i had was the alcoholic chick. her default weapon sucked balls if she tried to shoot something more than 2cm away, and her perk wasn't that useful.

I just went Boone and ED-E. I thought melee companions were impractical and I found I enjoyed both of their perks more than any others. Oh and Boone has to be one of the most quiet ones for that annoyingly repetive banter they do, always a plus.

I used Cass for a while for some quests, but mostly boone and ed-e. Anyone that melees tends to get in the way of me shooting. Thought I've lost ED-E and I have no idea where it is. I still have the enhanced sensors perk, but even the companion teleporter doesn't bring it to me anymore. So now it's just Boone. He has a tendency to just go aggroing through the whole level because he senses things through walls and whack them with a machete before I've finished looting the room. He often runs into many nightkin, or glowing ones or cazadors and gets himself killed unless I chase after him.

Personally just use boone and ed-e. With boone I'll give him a better melee weapon but he doesn't get another rifle. I find them to do just that little bit of damage that helps out but not enough that I'm not getting any kills.

This is why I liked Veronica...

That's the Deathclaw Alpha and 3 of his mates at level 22 on very hard in a straight up fight wearing light armour... plus Veronica blocking them. She managed to tank them quite effectively.

It's because the companion teleporter mod only affects the unupgraded EDE because the two are two different characters. To get it to work with the upgraded EDE you need to tweak the mod in GECK to tell it to include the two second versions of EDE.

Doesn't ED-E's location show up on the map anyway? The last patch included that companions locations show up on your map and I know mine do so it seem's silly that it can't be found.

You can also just open up the console and move them to you (or you to them) with this :

prid <ref_id> (ED-E's are [0010c769 (default)], [001694E2 (upgraded weapons)] or [001694E0 (upgraded armor)] )
moveto player

or you could use this to move to their location so you know where they got lost.
player.moveto <ref_id>

I've mostly used Boone as he's great at picking stuff off at long range. His custom rifle is more than adequate for the job so I don't bother giving him any weapons. Plus given that I've been playing pro-NCR, I figure I should let him have the chance to exact some revenge. I also prefer Ed-E over Rex; lasers for long range and flamethrower short-range is hard to beat.

I've just hired Veronica and used a mod to remove that ridiculous hood from her head. It's great fun watching her doing one-punch kills and funnier when she's doing it wearing that dress she's always asking for:

It's a shame I've hired Veronica when I've since discovered every location and completed pretty much most quests. Nothing left for her to fight now :( Time to wait for the new DLC...
