I'm interested but it seems like a total gimmick.

G'day Klas
I am one of the cofounders of the company and was involved in the original research.
Let me briefly try to explain how the technology works.
HRTF is the key to creating high fidelity 3D audio.
Other technologies use "generic" HRTFs because they have no means to measure your HRTFs. Unfortunately, these "generic" HRTFs will not be able to create a realistic 3D space and your sense of "presence" will be significantly degraded. An analogy would be for you to see an optometrist and he prescribes you an "average" set of glasses.
MyEars renders 3D audio using INdividualised HRTFs (Head Related Transfer Functions).
The technology behind MyEars involves a series of listening tasks and based on the results of those tasks we estimate your individualised HRTFs (again, similar to an eye test).
E.g.,
Take the case where we play a sound we thought should appear in front of you, yet you persist in hearing it behind you. This suggests to our algorithm that there was an error in a prior estimation and your profile will be updated accordingly.
In a way, you are "tuning" your own HRTFs.
The science behind MyEars stems from research we did over a decade at ANL (the Auditory Neuroscience Laboratory) in the University of Sydney. Simon, CEO/CTO of MyEars, is also an A/Professor and head of ANL.
Simon has created a blog where he discusses the background behind MyEars, it's a great read so do check it out.
http://sonications.posterous.com/I hope this short summary helps in some way to answering your question on how MyEars work. Rest assured, it's not a gimmick

.
Also, Just like to thank everyone for trying out MyEars.
We will have teething problems, even though we had an extensive "pre-beta" period. Nicola, our Technical Lead, goes through all your feedback and bug reports personally.
Bear with us while we iron all the bugs out.
Cheers
