Community Project - Become involved!

Unread postby TheMeadow » 16 Mar 10, 10:31 am

Heya!

I have decided to run a community based project right here on the forums! (Simple reasons for this are to get an active design community up and because this is just a part time project for me, there will be a lot of things others can do for it). I am currently studying Games Design at university and have a lot of experience leading teams etc and know all about scope.
But if you like the idea or think you can add something to the project, let me know via here or a PM (If you are IRC inclined I am in there usually 24/7).

What is The Project?

Basically I am trying to create a new experience for the player. The game itself is loosely based off Gazillionaire and the idea of trading resources between planets to create a stable and successful company in a world like EVEonline. Expanding on that idea, players will be able to fly between moons and planets to trade stuff, however the universe is constantly moving - so Moon A might be 30 min travel from Moon B, but if you wait say 20 minutes (and do other things) Moon A will rotate around the planet and might be now only 5 minutes away.

However by waiting, another player might have got in and bought all the cheap items - or sold exactly what you were bringing over for a profit and thus killing any massive profit you had imaged!

The universe is starting small (1 sun, 5 planets, 16 [I think] moon system) However a second system is being planned now and the direction of the code will allow for expanding to almost anything (Modularity is awesome.)

One of the other key ideas I wanted to have is that the player will feel they have impacted the universe. If they decide to trade metals or war machines to one faction in a time of war they may affect the outcome of that battle. (I.e. that faction might take over a planet system because more people gave it more of a means to do so)

So far the client and the server are being coded up together. The server will just keep track of the worlds and trades. The client will be a simple 3D / 2.5D interface of the system, or areas on planets to check out. I have started to play ideas for mining systems and other "things to do on the planet"

Extra Stuff that has been thought about

Okay so expanding on the basic idea some suggestions have been....
- Having a crew training them up to 'customize' your ship
- Owning/Operating of facilities on planets
- Mining/Exploration flying
- A facebook/Website integration to play while you are 'at work' or away from the client (buy/sell/check trade prices etc)

Specifics

The art itself will be low poly stuff, however I am using the engine for all the planets and they should only need textures.

The design is being modular so we can expand on it later. It is currently being scripted in a language called DarkBasic Professional.
The server is currently outputting all the data about the worlds into just .txt documents and the clients grab this from an ftp update their own person files. They will be encoded to stop any cheats and updated at regular times. (This is just the limitations of the engine itself, but the pros do have faster implementation of new stuff)

If you do become involved a contract will have to be signed. Simply just to say that this is a non-profit community project, however that if in the unlikely situation that money becomes involved you will be given royalties for the work you have provided. All your work is your own and you can freely advertise your work from the project - and you will be credited for it in the game and anywhere else listed with the game (Web etc). And all that jazz...

Why be involved?

So why be involved? Well if you are like me and have some spare time on the side and want to work on something for:
- Own portfolio
- Experience of working in a team on a project
- Bored?
- or if you feel you want to really make an impact on the world with this project... hell it might be something like what you were thinking of doing.

What you can do?

I am looking to have some people jump on and do whatever they think they can add to the project.

For designers they would chat to me and we can balance systems and such.

For Artists they would be working on 3D art works, Interface designs, menus, splash screens, planet textures as well as creating different races/technologies for those planets to incorporate.

For Webguys If there is any that know facebook stuff or Java let me know and we can build it around this as well.

IF there is any coders around I might be willing to ditch the current **** language for some real code IF they think they could develop a way to handle it all.

TLDR Version

Community Project - Trading Space game - Want to help? - Awesome.

Ooo this sounds fun! :D

I would like to play it a bit before attempting to help with it though.

We were currently playing ogame at the time and wanted something more visual as well as moving around ;)

At this time yes, however if I hve chatted to a few web design mates who think they could use php to read the same files If i give them the list of stuff etc.

Wow! A few years back I really wanted to create/find a game just like this, however at the time I had no idea where to start.
I had completely forgotten about the idea but looking at this it is virtually the same :D. (Though I didn't go into quite the detail you did)

I would certainly love to be a part of this project, but will not sign on just yet for a few reasons. However, I may try designing a few 3D models, if I feel they are of adequate quality(I'm not very experienced yet) then I will submit them to you for sure.
I have a few queries about the project though -

1. What is the art style you are going for in general, eg. realistic, cartoony, another abstract look (such as a blocky world, black and white etc). Do you want lots of flash looking ships with blue lights and glowing, or ships that look like they are made out of piles of rusted junk welded together or something else entirely.

2. You said you wanted it to be on the web, do yo want full on player interaction? (Player to player direct transactions and see each other's ships etc) or a more separated game world? (They all affect solar system status but do not see other players or trade directly etc)

3. What do you want story wise, do you want a no story just play the game sort of thing? A story that just explains the very basics of the world? Or a dynamic story that is altered depending on the state of the universe/solar system?(Whether typed up by you with a basic state of the economy and wars etc, or using presets in a condensed history page, things like "A war has broken out between Faction A and Faction B", "Faction A has taken control of Planet X" and "The price of #ITEM# has dropped significantly on Planet Y" as an example)

Ideas(You may have considered some of these already):

A ready made engine -
A ready made engine could simplify the process a lot. It could also get you away from DarkBasic much easier (by your comment I am guessing that is what you want to do?).I will suggest the best engine I have found that seems to fit this project well, which is Unity 3D.(NOTE: Following comments may be biased as I am a bit of a fanboy )
I know there are restrictions with licensing etc but the newly released free version can be used to make commercial games without any royalties to Unity Technologies. That is of course unless you expect to make over $100k in a year, in which case you have to get pro.

A few Pro's and cons
Hidden: show
Limitations to the free version are certain premade shaders/effects and real time shadows(by what you have described this won't affect much as you want a fairly low requirements game). Also you cannot directly modify the engine source, Linux support is unavailable and media streaming is pro only.

A few pro's are, it is very easy to use(compared to others I have tried), you can easily export to Windows Standalone, various OSX standalones, and best of all webplayer support(with a few games having been put on facebook already, paradise paintball and Off-Road Velociraptor safari are two very good quality Unity games). It has a partially custom programming language (It is javascript but with a lot of things to help with game design) or you can use C# or boo. Also it has been used for everything from indie games to large scale MMO's (Cartoon Network's Fusion Fall and Tiger Woods PGA Tour online).
A massive pro is a large community behind it, so you can usually get help fast if you have any troubles, and there are plenty of guides/tutorials/examples freely available. Official Features list is here

Damn, after typing that out I have forgotten all the gameplay ideas I had, I will post them here when I remember them :D.

Best of luck with the project!

A trading system idea -
This is a similar system to that used in a pirate MMO I played a while back.

It is a fairly simple system where every planet has 3 or 4 types of resources, a rocky planet may have iron*, fusion material*, oil* and coal*. An icy planet will have water*, iron* and wood*. You make money by buying from a resource producing planet and selling to another planet that needs that resource to survive.
(*examples)
In the above example with the rock and the water planet, the rock planet they need water to survive, and also as a part of the mining process. You buy water from the water planet, sell it to the rock planet for a profit. Depending on the amount of water the rock planet has, how much they buy the water for will change, so if a lot of people sell water to the rock planet and you go to sell later, you may barely make anything at all.

You also need to account for travel time and resources needed for you to travel (food, fuel etc). So if you buy 10 tons of coal from a planet for $1000 each ton and sell it for $1100 a ton, but the planets are light years away, you would lose money if you need $1500 worth of supplies.

Sounds like it could be fun. I will volunteer for some modeling and photochopping.

I may be able to help with coding too, depending on what language/engine you end up going with.
