I usually set the height for the bar on my benchpress to a couple of notches higher so it's easy enough for me to walk underneath bending my legs slightly to do my squats. Works a treat for me and I don't do my back in by lifting the bar off the floor and over my head onto my shoulders.

Yeah I always over extend my arm which pulls on the muscle.
I've done it that many times that my right shoulder is stronger than my left.
Strange in that face my whole body is left sided.
Never gone to the physio though to see what I should do with it.

I was told that I saved my knees heaps from strengthening my quads. I have/had tendinitis in both knees from growing too fast.

uni gym's ftw mate. i go to adelaide uni gym, love it
firstly i would recommend free weights, not machines. really depends what you want to do, helps that you are going with someone that is a gym nut

in all honestly the best thing you can do is grab a personal trainer (at our gym, you can sign up a session for free) and tell them what you want to achieve (get massive, get skinny, get cut, etc) and they will outline a routine. try and stick with it for a few months, then as you get used to the routines and how your own body is responding to them, you can make adjustments yourself in variations, exercises, etc. where a mate that knows what he is doin can really come in handy

cool cool!

i think they do have personal trainers n stuff to advise you what to do.
basically what i want to do is drop a bit of weight (90kg is ok for someone of my build, but could stand to lose a little/convert it to muscle) and regain the muscle mass in my arms/shoulders that i lost when i replaced exercising for drinking and studying at the start of the uni year :P

My Uni gym is always full of people (from looking in the window) so I've never gone in there. Not that I'm afraid of people, I just want to use the equipment on demand without having to wait.

Yeah in regards to routine, I wouldn't say you would need a personal trainer if you're always going to be with your mates if they know what they are doing and willing to help you out. Pretty much just watch what they do and follow their lead. (doing a lighter weight ofc)

Personal trainers are great in that they can specify a routine and tailor it to your lifestyle. While also they can show you the facilities around the gym and help you with technique.

It can be pretty expensive though, but it is worth it.

Yeah your friends should be able to help you :)

my suggestion for a personal trainer was firstly based on the fact that most of the time they will give you an initial "setup" session for free. and most of the time they will be trained in how to assess a person and their needs. just coz your mate is a beefcake doesnt mean he knows whats best for you
