The only instance of that I can remember seeing was Death Note, and frankly I don't think it was an issue with crossing between two mediums, it was more that the acting and direction was just rubbish.

I just watched The Last Airbender. As an adaption movie it was rubbish. I agree it was more the acting and direction and the mediums are as close as they can get.

The highest Rotten Tomatoes score was Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within with 43%, and that was largely a Japanese production.

But, final fantasy spirits within wasnt even based on any of the final fantasy games, so im not sure how thats related at all. But that fact in itself might be proving a point...

Whether or not movies are 'good' or not is incredibly subjective, and has no basis on what these 'reviews' think. What we should be looking at is their money spent to money made ratio (far cry? lol..) with movies like street fighter and mortal kombat making ALOT more than it cost to make the movie, i'd say they're both good AND successful. For if they werent good, they'd not be successful...

I think that's pretty facile. Good movies are usually financially successful but that's not always the case. Conversely, sometimes bad movies can be financially successful.

You're right in saying that what's good and bad (in terms of quality) is hard to pin down due to how subjective it is, but I think determining such based on the budget and income of each film is far less accurate and meaningful than an analysis of hundreds of independant reviews such as on Rotten Tomatoes, etc.
