Half Life 2: Episode 3 Alive and Well; and On Source 2…

…if code examples and tidbits in the Source Filmmaker SDK is anything to go by.

From ValveTime:

Some clever kids have also found the below indicator from line 1385 of vproj.py:
Code: Select all
        def getEngine( self ):
                '''
                Return an str with the current engine version.
                If key doesn't doesn't exist, assume 'Source', otherwise invalid -- assume next-gen 'Source 2'.
                '''
                try:
                        eng = unicode( self.getChunk().Engine.value )
                        if eng not in ENGINE.ALL_ENGINES:
                                return ENGINE.SOURCE2
                        return eng
                except ( AttributeError, ValueError ):
                        try:
                                # HACK: check vproject for 'source2' or 'hybrid' and guess the engine.
                                projDir = str.lower( self.getProjectDir() )
                                if 'source2' in projDir:
                                        return ENGINE.SOURCE2
                                elif ( 'hybrid' in projDir ) or ( 'l4d2port' in projDir ):
                                        return ENGINE.HYBRID
                                else:
                                        return ENGINE.SOURCE
                        except AttributeError:
                                return ENGINE.SOURCE

And to top it off, a little teaser straight from Valve to tie it all together:
Valve wrote: We don’t like to brag, but Source is considered the most flexible, comprehensive, and powerful game development environment out there. And it’s about to get even better.

We all knew it was coming but when people find little breadcrumbs like these hidden around the place it DOES make me all giddy.

Thanks to TechSpot and ValveTime (oh, and Valve of course)…

Yay!

They really did need to finish Ep3 before they could drop the concept gracefully and move on to HL3.

Episode 3 to me is just a name nothing more. To me it will be the installment that ends the story started in Episode 1 and will pathe the way towards the proper Half Life 3. If they turned Episode 3 into Half Life 3 it would be an injustice to what Half Life 3 could have been imo so i'm glad they might be finishing off Episode 3 before moving on.

It will not be so, unfortunately.

If Episode 3 is on Source 2 than it will be a major release (not incremental) meaning that it will have to be (at least, it common sense prevails) Half Life 3.

yeah, I'm imagining a prologue section that goes for about half an hour before the main "Half Life 3" story kicks off properly.

That is quite a misleading title. Though I'm excited for what may happen.

No it is not! The title is cut off and continues in the first line of the post.

Considering the differences made with the release of the orange box,m i can see it being source2 for Ep3 and then 2.2 or 2.5 for HL3. knowing valve, could be 2023 when we see HL3...

Or Duke Nukem Forever. And look how well that turned out.

Valve are going to have to pull off something special for Episode 3 or HL3 or whatever it will end up as. The fact that HL2 is underwhelming for a lot of younger/newer gamers leads me to think that Valve need to do more than just rely on the devotion of us fans who lived through the original HL & HL2 releases.

I don't think it is quite the same as DNF. DNF was always had claims of development and being this great game and then never delivered. At least with HL3 or EP3 there was no rock solid confirmation of it anywhere. Having said that, HL3 probably has way more hype building for it, so there is a possibility it could DNF on us.

Half-Life 2 on release was fantastic, its not so epic years down the track I.e Episode 2 but it was pretty special at the time.

They might include a prelude to cover of what has been missed in a HL3 game to get everyone on board. Just an Idea.
