Add to your GoN stylish script or equivalent :)
Code: Select all
span { color: #000000 !important;}

Unfortunately I can't make it apply only to certain users. That would require some time and some Javascript.

I feel that I need to reiterate that having articles drop off the front page with no way to get to them easily again is annoying as there was some articles I wanted to read but didn't have time the other day, now I have to go off and manually try and find them. Also there's absolutely 0 point in making a post now given that no one will ever see it.

Our RSS feed (http://games.on.net/feed/) has the latest 25 articles on it at all times, or you can sign up to the email digest?

Likewise, I don't visit the front page at all any more, just wait for the RSS feeds (because I'm not bothering commenting).

More along those lines, if he does find his article and wishes to discuss it in the comments, no one will ever know there is a new comment/ no one will ever read it. The only way to tell if there is a recent/new comment is if you have memorized the comment number when you last saw it.

And care enough to regularly, manually check the thread to see if new comments have indeed been made.

I'm trialling a new 'latest comments' section, which you can see here:

http://games.on.net/comments/

Still ironing out a few bugs, but it's been helpful as a way for me to quickly track comments over the last few days. Keep an eye on it, we'll be making some changes as we further refine the comments system.

You must be wanting to read a realllly old article, because the front page has a latest regulars and latest features section. Articles in each tend to stay up for 1-2 weeks. In the old forums, 1-2 week articles would be buried well down the forum page.

It's actually one of my favourite things about the redesign, because I can easily get access to features, instead of them always buried by news.

Unless you're talking more about news?

Looks interesting but how does it work? Some of the articles show more comments than others and how will it work if you just want to be notified of new posts from articles you've commented on like in forum threads? It's what I liked of forum threads because you can quickly check all the threads (because there's so many on screen at once for one thing) and which ones have new comments and which ones you yourself have commented on via those icons on the left (though the icons in question still need updating :P ).

No older than the two Spec-Ops articles. And I don't agree, if there was a discussion it was always at the top of the forums and given the sheer amount of threads you can see at once it was very easy to find an article written within the last month imo with you having to go to the 3rd page at most (and if the sub-forums had been used properly instead of lumping everything into General News this would have been even less of a problem).

How again?

And ironically, I've been strongly arguing in favour of the new system and yet my articles have been going strong in terms of comments. :P

For the record i'm still of the opinion that any discussion that takes place in the articles happens inspite the new system, not because of it. :P

ninja'd that comment before you edited mwahahahahahah! :P

/edit

Huh...just went back and searched like 10ish pages and found a ton of articles that I had commented on but never knew that new comments had been made.

How Again?

The "Recent Features" and "The Regulars" bars on the right hand side list all of the most recently posted features alongside the most recent addition from the regular columns GON post. They stay there for quite a long time.

And around we go. Can't say I've ever struggled with keeping track of content i'm interested in. Let alone do I blame the websites I visit.

High five!

As Tim suggested RSS is another great way to stay connected to sites you enjoy.

Every 30 minutes I check both the games.on.net news and comments feeds for activity :), and store their contents for 1 year locally on my computer.

Quite a few mail clients support this these days, I'm using Mail :)

If anyone wants to try and replicate this, go nuts! http://games.on.net/comments/feed/

The combinations are endless if you have the time to review the wordpress documentation for RSS feeds :).
