Interesting Phone Call

Interesting Phone Call

Unread postby Kendrite » 28 Jun 12, 4:12 pm

Just got of the phone to a guy who rang telling me he is from Microsoft Support and that he has detected a problem with my computer.

I've heard of this scam before and regardless I'm not gullible enough to have believed a word of it.

Anyhow, I played along for a bit but then asked him a few questions and finally asked why he seeded to know so little about computers and he laughed. He realised I knew it was a scam. He thought he was quite funny and told me he wanted to marry the girl next to him who he then put on so I could convince her to marry him...blah, blah.

We had a conversation and I explained what he was doing is unethical and he said it's the only job he can get earning $50k per year. I explained that is probably because he is helping steal it from unsuspecting people.

Anyhow, now I'm wondering. What do they try to get you to do? Install something which is like a key logger or gives them remote access to your PC?

I received a phone call last week from someone claiming to be from Microsoft. He claimed that I have a fake copy of Windows 7 installed (well, he's got a point). He asked me "Do you have any computers in the house?", to which I replied "No. None at all". Befuddled, he asked, "Are you sure? No computer devices at all in your house?". I stood my ground and said "No, sorry mate, no computer devices at all. Good luck trying to scam someone else". He then hung up the phone. True story.

I haven't had a call from them in a long time but one time the guy argued with me when he said he was from Windows Support and I said "Don't you mean Microsoft Support?" and he said "NO, I am from Windows Support!".

Damn if I had that call I would have asked him to come around as I have a window in the back shed that could use some support, I have to use a stick to hold it up when open. Image

Heh, I had one tonight and for a change he didn't claim to be from Microsoft, but from Global CompuTech. He informed me they had had complaints that my computer was sending "something" out that was interfering with their clients' computers and that he could help me fix my computer to prevent it happening.

He was a bit taken aback when I laughed at him and asked if anybody really fell for that, threw him right off his script... and after flailing for a little while, hung up.

Sensibly, he straight up asked for the computer owner, cheating me of my usual "I don't own a computer" line.

They're learning, slowly. :)

Never gotten one. Or I may have and hung up before I heard what it was about. Indian accent or a delay connecting after I answer and that's all she wrote. If it's at all legit and even a little bit important they'll have my address and they can send me a damn letter.

The generally get you to install some remote access software, point out some meaningless errors in Event Viewer, disable some 'virus' services to break your computer then try to charge you for their security product to 'fix the problem'.

I wonder if they've worked out how to tell if they're working on a VM yet.
