I though Sentinel 3 was pretty good.

I've played a tower defense game on a free weekend on steam once, might have been Defense Grid, can't remember, it was scifi and 3d but it was fun. I don't think anything has matched Pokemaul on Warcraft 3 though, making the mazes is fun and there's something a bit more pure about it and playing with friends gives it a big plus as well. Other TD's i've tried playing have felt weak usually removing things like the maze making and just making the game feel a bit tedious in some way.

These aren't 'classic' tower defense but;

Dungeon Defenders is pretty good, there's a small lack of content and the people modifying weapons to be OP ruins some of the challenge, however it has a decent amount of players online so you get a good amount of play out of it.

Sanctum is also not bad however there's a severe lack of content and player activity so you won't get much play out of it, had a bit of fun with a few mates for a couple of days though.

Hey guys if you are interested in a new indie TD game allow me to introduce Fight for Dawn. It is being made by a few uni students and will hopefully be released in a few weeks.

got another thread on this topic, though not really up to date;

my favorites - SOL SURVIVOR on steam. its great fun co-op. lots of towers to choose from, and just a lot of fun. decent 3d graphics. you can play variations like an attack and defend mode so you throw units at your foe whilst defending.

Gratuitous tank battles - massive array of componants to customise and make your own unique towers. also has an attack mode so you can be the attacker. combined with an easy map editor and online servers to share maps -total win.
MUSCULARTEETH - Many things, mostly to do with Art.

SOL Survivor, that's the one I was thinking of before. Thanks. Twas a fun game but it gets old when the enemy follows its line and you can only build around said line, too passive.

Toy Soldiers.

TOY SOLDIERS.

I sheet you not, asides from being the greatest representation/game of the First World War I have ever seen, it's an incredible TD game. None of this "glorified spreadsheet, press fast forwards half the time" Turrets have no statistics, act believably (compared to X-percentage-to-hit, I guess) and you can also control biplanes, tanks and the turrets themselves to get involved with the fight.

There's the rattle of machine guns, the every aching thud of artillery, and the hiss of gas as you fly above the battlefield in your biplane, strafing the enemy. It's actually reverantly horrific, though the fact the enemy explodes into a shower of clockwork saves the game from being totally inhumane. I really do think this is the greatest "vision" of the horrors of the First World War I've encountered, and it should be played for that reason alone. To watch a map turn from pleasant country side to blackened wasteland is pretty haunting.

If you haven't tried Toy Soldiers and have any interest in WW1 or tower defence games, try Toy Soldiers or Toy Soldiers Cold War.

(Also get it on X-Box 360, the PC version just doesn't capture the same feeling for a bunch of small reasons)

Orcs Must Die is also, of course, brilliant... but for some reason it didn't FULLY satisy me.

I really can't stand most "generic" Tower Defence games nowadays. I played Defense Grid as highly reccomended by a TD loving mate, but found it to be shite.

Also Revenge of the Titans is an extremely charming, funny and difficult TD game on Steam. Pixelly retro goodness that really comes off as authentic.

I remember the first time I played a TD game (Warcraft II), was hooked on it for quite a fair bit tbh. But since then, haven't actually touched any TD games (for reasons unknown). I should get back into it, shouldn't I?! Thank you for this thread!

Also on the same note, my partner's been playing Revenge of the Titans for the last couple of months on and off, and it looks awesome. Space Invaders + Pac Man + Tower Defense. What can be better?

revenge of the titans IS awesome, but a bit different from your classic TD gameplay
