Alcohol Content in a "Drink" ...

Alcohol Content in a "Drink" ...

Unread postby Wyld » 7 Apr 12, 12:15 pm

Was just musing ..

A bottle of red wine has, let's say, 14% alc/vol .. so a 250ml glass of red wine contains 14% alc/vol (of the glass) as well. Easy.

So a bottle of Wild Turkey has 43.4% alc/vol (86.8 proof) .. so how much alc/vol would a 250ml glass need to be diluted with a mixer, so bring it down to say 10%?

Logic says if I use 1 part bourbon to 4 parts mixer, it should be close .. but memory says I'll get way pissed on that faster than if I drank wine of the same volume.

The random things you think of when playing Minecraft ..

As to the logic...

It would be 1 part bourbon to 3 parts mixer. That would make it 1/4 of the drink (being 1 + 3) or approx ~8.6%.

In fact, if you went 1 part bourbon to 2 parts mixer, you'd had almost a sweet 14.3 odd%, which would bring it more in line with the wine... meaning in a 250ml glass, you'd be pouring a whopping total of ~83ml of booze.

Does that make sense or is my sleep deprivation making my maths all funny and stuff.

Yeah, see that makes sense from the numbers ...

But.

If I pour a 1 to 3 ratio of turkey and dry .. and compare that to a glass of wine .. I'm getting more smashing on the turkey.

Thus my question :)

(1 / 5) * .434 = 0.0868

I think you mean 1 part bourbon to 4 parts mixer. Or 50ml to a 250ml drink.

:D

Also, i heard that sugar content in alcohol has some pretty noticeable effects.

Cheers Hellboy, meant 10% for 1 to 3 (which was the original question).

And with that, sugar and carbonation play key factors in getting well mashed. Sugar driving your blood pressure up and making you feel 'more woozy' due to the obvious increase in pressure, and carbonation increasing the pressure in your stomach, effectively 'forcing' the alcamahol into your blood stream faster (via the stomach lining).

The numbers are here...
http://www.health.gov.au/internet/alcoh ... sguide-cnt

The formula here...
http://www.health.gov.au/internet/alcoh ... t/standard

Using their numbers to make life easier -

100ml of red wine at 13% = 1 standard drinks
30 ml of spirits at 40% = 1 standard drink

250ml of red wine = 2.5 standard drinks
75ml of spirits = 2.5 standard drinks

1 part bourbon to 2.3333333... parts mixer = 2.5 standard drinks in a 250ml bourbon and coke

I agree with you Wyld - The numbers say one thing but experience suggests otherwise

Just ask mothers about kids and soft drinks - and ask the same question of scientists.... There is no evidence in controlled circumstances that soft drinks make kids hyper - but you ask every mother out there and you'll hear a different story....

Well if sugar and carbonation are the culprits, the obvious solution is to use water as the mixer.

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.

Methinks Milo + milk, warmed up, with a shot (or two) of Baileys.

Keeping in mind some alcohol have strength in flavour too which can make a impact.

Alibi Bourbon and Jim Beam Bourbon are both 37% in a 700mL Bottle, however Alibi will get you SLIGHTLY drunk faster, simply because the flavour is stronger then Jim Beams, which effects your body. The Alcoholic % is the same, but the strength of flavour between the two is just that tiny bit different.

Which then we have Dodger's Sugar intake.

Basically you'll never get it 100% on the mark with an exact "1 Standard Drink"

....Why are we talking about this anyway?
