Casual employment rates

Casual employment rates

Unread postby =beast= » 5 Feb 12, 9:20 pm

im a casual employee at one of my jobs where i work about 20-22 hours a week. its a sip n save (thats privatly ownd or something something)

iv been working sundays @ standard rate. atm im just sick of working every sunday for 9 hours

are (all) casual employees entitled to time and a half on sundays?
i dont know what the deal is and i dont really want to make a fuss about it unless i know i can have a supporting argument, other than "want more money"

i only bring this up because the other guy i work with on sundays is already on a higher rate than me (hes about 60 years old, i dunno if that makes a difference?)

As far as I know the retail award rate thingy is 1.5 on Sundays and 1.25 on Saturdays. I'd suggest to either see the union about the award rates, or look at your contract (If you signed one).

As for age, I'm unsure about retail but in industries where I am from we sign a Eb agreement which usually involves a pay rise every year.

Fight it if it is wrong. When people pull stuff like under paying staff, it really grinds my gears.

Are you sure you didn't sign anything when you started working? It could state somewhere that there is an agreement the apples for everyone working in the store.

In comparison to retail that is quite a good base rate but no where near what you should be earning on Sunday. iirc the bunnings rate for a casual over 21 year of age was about 21 an hour. which is around 30 an hour for Sunday.

I'm unsure if working at a sip-n-save comes under the same award as bar tenders/club workers.

yeah, never signed a thing. might be something to do with it being privatly owned. only thing i signed was the standard tax file form.

i guess i might just have to bring it up with the owner or something. Hes a nice guy so i didnt really want to cause a fuss. but seeing as i worked full time at another job (which has now ended), i was finding it hard to jusity 9 hour sundays @ my standard rate. but now that im studying again im going to have very little free time for assginments if im working weekends

this is how im gonna feel tomorrow

Beast I don't know the rules regarding this stuff but these guys do

http://www.fwa.gov.au/

contact details:
1300 799 675
Mon - Fri: 9.00am - 5.00pm

they also, it appears, have a live online help on that website above.

Working at Centrelink I get a lot of phone calls from unemployment new claimants who have been unfairly dismissed, they've either already called these guys or are about to call them.

You can make it a general enquiry so that you don't bring anything back on your employer if you just want to find stuff out.

hope that helps mate, good luck!

Had a quick glance through it, Couldnt find anything linking to weekend rates, just overtime (which doesnt apply to casuals it seems), Might have missed in there but I'd say call them.

I also had a quick look at the reward rates for some related industries and it didn't have anything special for sundays.

If your casual you don't get paid the extra for weekends, when I worked at Blockbuster I would work Saturdays/Sundays and not recieve extra for wasting my time.

Unless you have a contract with them then your not entitled to the extra hours from my readings. I thought I was getting ripped off so I read everything I could find =P

It's probably different everywhere you go. As long as you are getting paid above the minimum I don't know if there is anything wrong. I work casual in retail and get no extra on Saturday but I think I get 1.7 on Sunday, but I've only worked Sunday once or twice. Everyone wants to work Sunday to get more money.

I'm %99 certain the retail award is 1.5 on Sunday and 1.25 on Saturday. Which would applies to casuals/part time and full time.

The question would be if it actually comes under the retail award. Their should be a union that covers the workers their. They would def know.

EDIT: After reading above post, I can't remember if the retail award is 1.5 or 1.7 now.
