Guide : Setting Up Richard Burns Rally and Gen DIscussion

Unread postby Mearehear » 11 May 12, 5:33 pm

For a game from 2004 Richard Burns Rally still has a lot going for it. That said, there is still a few tweaks and fixes that must be made to get the most out of it on a modern computer with widescreen etc. This first post will be on setting up default Richard Burns Rally, without mods. I will reserve the 2nd post here to add a guide for mods with RBR.

Looking for where to buy Richard Burns Rally? >>Try Here<< (Digital Download - Buy £7.99) Thanks to DarkMellie for the link!

FOR DEFAULT RBR

Installation and Patching

1. Install your copy of Richard Burns Rally (bet you needed my help for that :P)
2. Download the last patch (v1.02) made for RBR from the games.on.net files >>DOWNLOAD HERE<<
3. Install the patch, and run RBR once and exit.

Necessary File Tweaks
Go to the folder you installed RBR into and make the following changes (note some files may be set to "read only" and require this option to be unchecked)

1. Find "RichardBurnsRally.ini" and delete the "Constant Force Multiplier" Line.
Then in the same file, look to the last lines to find "XRes" & "YRes" and set these to your desired screen resolution.

Also, to start the game faster, set these option in the same file.
RunIntro = false
RunStartup = false

2. Delete the file "PC_InputFilter" (yes really delete it)

Fixing Aspect Ratio Problems
RBR wasn't designed for widescreen resolutions and even though we can use the Xres and Yres options as stated above, this still leaves stretching due to incorrect aspect ratio. This can however be fixed with an 3rd party addon tool called Camhack.

1. Download Camhack 3 and extract anywhere you like - >>DOWNLOAD HERE<<
2. Run Camhack by itself once, so that it creates a config.ini file. The config.ini file contains a line "FOVY" - Here we need to do a little maths to find the number that will correct your aspect ratio.

Firstly: Your RES Width divided by your RES Height = "A"
eg. 1366 / 768 = 1.77864 (A)

Then: 1.33333 (native non-widescreen ratio) / A = Your "FOVY"
eg. 1.33333 / 1.77864 = 0.74963

Now place this number in the config.ini at FOVY and save.

IMPORTANT You must start Camhack, then launch RBR each time (making a batch file would be helpful), and when in game, PRESS * to activate Camhacks fix. You will know it is running right if you can change camera views. with 1,2,3 etc. You can also then edit your camera view with the NUMPAD, and save the views by pressing CTRL + "a number".

Fixing the HUD for Widescreen

Image

When you have edited your screen resolution for widescreen, you will find the HUD (referred to as DIGIDASH ingame, FULL and MINI) is often off screen. Fixing this is a bit of trial and error.

1. Find the file MISC.rbz in your main RBR Directory, and open/extract it with an appropriate tool (I use IZARC).
2. You should then have a folder in your RBR Directory called "Misc" - Make sure it hasn't doubled up itself after extraction (eg c:/rbr/misc/misc is bad)
3. Find the "digidash_1280.ini" file (or one that is closest to your screen res - eg digidash_1600.ini) and open it to view the first two lines under "Hud Position". These relate to pixel positions of your DIGIDASH. Think of the top left corner of your screen as 0,0 and as bottom right as (example of mine) 1366,768. Increasing the first number moves your HUD right, Increasing the second number moves your HUD down, and the reverse. Try some numbers, then check ingame where it sits, and adjust until it is sitting nicely in your bottom right of screen. Repeat for "minidash"

ALTERNATIVE FIX Download the GT5 Style HUD modification (view on Youtube), and turn off the default DIGIDASH. >>DOWNLOAD HERE<<

Final Details
A few final suggestions.

1. Set your wheel steering lock somewhere between 360 and 540 in Windows settings. The lower, the more sensitive. I use between 400 and 450 most times. You don't want 900 here!
2. Turn off "Auto Center" found in controls section ingame.
3. Under Pacenotes, in Options, is a slider that changes how soon, or late, your Co-Driver calls out the turns. Adjusting this to what feels good for you makes a HUGE difference.
4. If you are crashing too often, you are driving too fast!
5. Create a driver profile with the name "MULLIGATAWNY" to unlock all cars and tracks under that profile.

Presuming you have done all listed in the above post, the next big step with progressing Richard Burns Rally is the RSRBR mods, with the current version being RSRBR 2012. This contains a wide variety of car/track addons & modifications, and most importantly it contains the ability to COMPETE ONLINE in rally events. *Note* - This does not mean you will ever see another car online, but it manages live rally events and collates times/data to give a true rally event experience, with other drivers.

As there is so much to RSRBR to explain (especially given that it comes in a confusing mix of French/English languages) I am going to try to keep this guide to 1. How to Download and Install (with basic guide to running) and secondly 2. Registering and Racing RSRBR Online

Richard Burns Rally with RSRBR 2012 MOD

Download and Installation
Firstly download the following files, and install in the order listed. Some of these files are quite heavily compressed and can be slow to extract and install, just give them time. Downloads are also quite slow for all but the tracks, which is the only file with a Games.On.Net mirror (I will add others to the "suggest a file" thing later)

1. RSRBR 2012 Base Content >>DOWNLOAD<< (414mb)
2. RSRBR Required 2012 Updates
- Update 1 >>DOWNLOAD<< (66mb)
- Update 2 >>DOWNLOAD<< (11.6mb)
- Update 3 >>DOWNLOAD<< (66.6mb)
- Update 4 >>DOWNLOAD<< (207mb)
3. RSRBR 2012 Track Pack >>DOWNLOAD<< (1.39gb - Games.On.Net mirrored)
4. RSRBR 2012 Car Pack >>DOWNLOAD<< (828mb)
5. Extra "BTB Country" Stages >>LINK<< (Separate Files - not crucial right away)

RSCenter2012 - Registering Your Driver Profile.

After you have installed the above files, you will find two shortcuts on your desktop "Lanceur Addons" and "RSCenter". All that we are going to use here for now is the RSCenter shortcut. RSCenter will now become your new front end to Richard Burns Rally with RSRBR, and when you first run it you will need to register a driver profile. In the image below (thumbnailed - click to enlarge) you can see where you must register, highlighted by a green rectangle.

Image

This will open a new window and ask you to fill out some details. Let it select your driver number, then fill out your desired username etc. When you submit it, don't be surprised, or too worried, if you get an error message. The whole process from here on gets a little messy and broken.

IMPORTANT - It is highly likely you will not receive your activation email, and you will be left not knowing the state of your account. Follow the steps below to correct this problem (trying to find the info on their site yourself is a nightmare).

1. Go >>HERE<< and enter the email you registered with. It will send you an email repeating your driver number and username, and you will see the password assigned is not the one you set when registering. Save this info. (you are still not activated)
2. Go >>HERE<< and register for their forum. This is separate to your driver account.
3. Wait 24hrs and if you still have not received an email that your driver is activated make a post >>HERE<< on their forum requesting activation, stating your username and driver number that you received in step 1. Please do wait the 24hrs though, or they are not impressed. They will reply back soon enough and activate you.

When activated you can now enter your details in the top left of RSCenter, and choose to launch "PLAY ALONE", "PUBLIC SESSIONS" or "CHAMPIONSHIPS".

Playing RSRBR 2012 SOLO
Clicking "Play Alone" will launch the window the window below (again Thumbnailed - click to enlarge) You will notice the green A and B I have added to the image.

Image

A - This is where you chose the "car pack" and "surface mod" that you will launch the game with, as well as your actual car/stage/conditions. The "A8W" classes are basically your WRC Class Rally Cars, and these have been divided up into years. If you want to use the basic Richard Burns Rally cars, choose A8W-03. Then you can chose your "surface mod" which allows you to take any of the stages in RBR, and change their track surface to something else. For example, Australia being set on gravel by default can now been changed to tarmac, or any other mix of surfaces.

B - This section gives you a few options in the way you launch. Pressing GO will take you almost instantly to the stage you have chosen in A. Choosing the other options in B basically take you to the games front menu, but with the chosen car pack and surface mods installed.

NOTE - If you haven't created one yourself, RSRBR creates an ingame profile with the cheat unlock "MULLIGATAWNY". You should always select this profile ingame when using RSRBR in solo or online modes. This will mean having to set your basic controls and options again.

RSRBR 2012 ONLINE (Public Sessions)
This is the part I would like to mainly focus on, as it opens up amazing abilities to hold detailed rally events against any number of drivers, without the need for a server, or any cost whatsoever. Firstly fire up RSCenter and choose "Public Session". It will launch a window as shown below. Also open your browser to >>THIS PAGE<<, which is a list of all "live" Public Sessions (2nd image).

1.Image 2.Image

In image 2 you can see where I have added a green A and B. A is the section from which you can create your own online events (which I will detail further down the page) and B lists the status of currently listed events. You can see below B the columns show information such as whether the event is active/finished, or passworded. We don't actually join an event from here, but it is a quick way to gather information on what is available (and what car pack you will need to choose to be compatible to join each event).

Joining an Online Event.
First thing you should be aware of with the online events is that your time must be in sync with the servers time. This is done by going into File/Settings of RSCenter and setting your GMT time setting. This can be a bit tricky as your normal GMT time won't work depending on their DST time. For instance, I am in WA with normal GMT of +8, but the only way it would sync with their time was to set +7. If you are not "sync'd" with their server time, it will spit out an error message (and want to change your PC's time) at you each time you click "Start Online Session"

1.Image 2.Image

Image 1 shows the button you must click to join an online session (Start Online Session). This then opens the small window shown in image 2, and will list any events that you may enter. An event is only available to enter within 15 minutes before its first stage launch time. You must also ensure you have the correct car pack selected for the event, or it will reject your attempt to sign up for the event.

If your attempt to join an available event is successful, the GO button in image 1 will now say STANDBY and the countdown timer above it will be showing what remains of the 15min prerace countdown. Once this reaches 0 the GO button will give you 60seconds to click it (very much like iRacing) and when you do it will launch the game. Be sure here to choose the MULLIGATAWNY profile, and it will then take you straight to the "Start Stage" screen, where you can begin your drive.

RACE ON!! :)

After your drive it will exit you back out of the game, and it will submit your time for the event. This will be listed with all the other drivers times for the event, once they have finished their stage drive also. From here you then begin any remaining stages to the event, or wait to see the results if it was the final event stage.

Creating an Online Event.
Creating an event is a very simple task, and allows you to create rallies that can have as many as 15 consecutive stages.

1.
Image 2.Image

The green A in image 1 shows where to you can create a Public Session, on the Public Sessions webpage. Image 2 shows the creation window that appears after choosing to create a session. You can see in image 2 that it is very straight forward process. Name your session, give it a password if you wish to keep it as a private event, then choose the car pack to be used, and pick the stages you wish to use.

The most important part of the event creation is the event time. In the left of image 2, you can see the current server time (with a red background) and to the right of the image 2 is where you must set the desired start time of your event. Keep the server time in mind when setting the time for your event. You must also remember that the time to set for your event will be when the actual 15minute prerace countdown starts, so whatever time you set for the event, the first stage will start 15mins after the time set during creation. From there you simply join your created session in the same way you would join any other session.

Final Details
1. Remember to run CamHack before launching RSCenter.
2. Default RBR can be run from the normal RBR exe, but it will run what ever mods you last ran in RSRBR. So you must set surfaces to normal, and cars to 03, before being able to launch default RBR.
3. More stuff when I think of it (my head hurts after this, gawd!)

Cheers for the fixes... Had already applied a couple of ones when i first installed, however it appears as though when I patched the game, it caused some files to be rewritten.

Should get some online RSRBR action happening :D

Yes mate it should, some of the info I learnt it from was by a guy doing his 3 screen setup with it.

Sure is Matty!

Damn RSRBR's website is a total mess, which isn't helped by the fact it is split with French and English. I think it would have to be one of the most terrible sites I have come across in terms of links and info being spread all over the place in a very random layout.

Waiting on my RSRBR/RSCenter account to be activated to enable the online side to RSRBR, then I will get the Mod guide done.

So does the RBRBR thingy affect much of the original?

I know it adds cars etc but my question is can I play the original RBR, the way it is meant to be played but prettier?

Great job in gathering info too. :)

If you install RSRBR it lets you play the standard RBR game.

Yup, what 'Mellie said :)

I will try to get the RSRBR mod guide done this weekend (if it gets activated in time) and in that I will try to also explain as much of it as is sensibly possible. It also uses a set profile using the cheat code MULLIGATAWNY (unlock all), so you can have a separate default RBR drivers profile to play the default game too.

Looking forward to your RSRBR guide, like you said their website is VERY confusing. I've never raced a race in it yet.

Once your driver profile is all activated and set it is not so bad, and taking part in online rallies in done in a way that somewhat iRacing "like", in that you join a rally event/series that is due to kick off at a set time, and you launch the game once you hit that time.

It's just getting activated and dealing with any info on the site beforehand that can drive a sane person crazy! :?
