posted this elsewhere but for different reasons...

This is what i was hoping for, NFS dev team had their hands tied by EA. beneath the surface of NFS Shift is a full blown SIM engine,named "gecko"

Only time will tell as the best sim modders in the worldwide community start wroking and releasing working mods.

One of the best GTR2 modders said on nogripracing.com

JULS: "I had occasion to check the physics files inside NFS Shift. I have few things to say about that:

- there is a full sim engine inside, with parameters for wet weather, tyre wear, box wear, ...engine damage, gearbox damage, flat tyres, multiple arms suspensions...etc. It has at least the same possibilities than ISI engine, and I suppose more.

- this sim engine uses configuration files very similar to GTR2, with some additional parameters. Sometimes it reminds me RBR settings too.

- this engine is called "gecko" and if I remember well this was the name of the new generation engine Simbin announced before they splited with Blimey.

- some tweak files (aitweaking.xml, physicstweaking.xml) were added to downgrade the physics. For example driving modes like novice, pro have a grip multiplier applied... 1.2 for pro mode. Damage has been reduced by a factor 10, many damage possibilities are disabled in these config files...

- there is a lag (intentional??) before controller input is taken into account, hence the float like a boat feeling. I saw something about controller lag defined in every car configuration file too.

I do not know if NFS Shift, with some tweaking, could use the full potential of this engine, but anyway this engine exists, and I hope it will be used in a sim in a near future."

Damm Right Mellie,
TOCA 3 was a great game back in the day the good old V8 Supercars! i raced on that game for years every night with the local online boys. But it seems like rfactor is where the main racing is and most of the community has gone to. but never the less New NFS SHIFT il be getting soon once i upgrade this system.

Apologies for the long post.. but I'm rFactor mad atm...

Here's a compilation of information regarding the XGN racing community as well as links to the absolute best of the best rFactor mods (V8Factor and CTDP are insanely enjoyable)

Well hi there!

With so many of us now having a G25 and getting right into Shift, I think it might be time to open a few eyes to the brilliant racing leagues held over at XGN. These guys are very tidy people, same age spread as us and all they want to do is have a good game.

XGN use rFactor mods to run their leagues. The mods used are;

* CTDP 2006 (formula 1) (I also recommend getting the F1RFT track pack, see links below)
* Touring Car Legends (60's and 70's TC's)
* Historix (60's)
* Porsche Carerra Cup (as it says)

There are two race nights a week for the bottom three on that list with wednesday alternating between TCL and Historix and Thursday is the very beginner friendly PCC mod. Their Formula 1 Kart series is highly over-populated which is a real shame, there's only 20 slots with 60 people registered. They run from donations which help fund the servers.

They're very professionally set up. The season is planned from go to woe and one of the penultimate rounds is always a Bathurst Enduro where you'll team up and take it in turns to complete a 500km race.

The way rFactor handles race meets makes all this possible. It has Practicing sessions, Qualifying, Shootouts and Race Day. But it's a testament to the league organisers that each of these sessions run smoothly... there's no rambo driving like in Shift and other arcade racers, you mess up and you cop penalties.

Here's an example of how this coming season is set up.

First race grid lineup is determined by Qualifying position
Second race grid lineup is determined by First race finishing position.

Normal tire wear and fuel use
Race start time: 11:00am
Race time scale: Normal
Black Flag rules only
Standing Start
Mechanical Failures set to ON
Compulse PitStops: If a Compulse pit stop is required then 2 tyres minimum must be changed.

****No race restarts**** Please be aware of this and remember the race does'nt end on the first lap. So make sure your not ending someone else's!

As you can see, they're extremely well organised.

There are still two driver slots open for this coming season and I'm sure you will be made most welcome as a new driver. I get lapped multiple times just about every race but it's an absolute blast to participate in.

Go here and register a forum account: http://www.xgn.com.au/forums/index.php

Go here to register for Season 5: http://www.simraceway.com.au/index.php? ... &Itemid=30

Also, for those with a G25 I can't recommend CTDP enough as a brilliant way to spend time. The tracks are perfectly modelled but you will be extremely hard pressed to get good times on just about any circuit (the true mark of a sim is its lap times imho)... but as you get to know them you will really start to enjoy trying.

Download Links - This is by no means yet a complete list, I'm having trouble finding all the files I need as my net is capped. Will come back and update asap.

About as promising as being shot in the head by a Texan.

SHIFT had a great engine, but at the same time due to the massive alterations it failed to be a Need For Speed game. If they had released it as a Sim then it would have been better, but to release it as an NFS game was a travesty.

The biggest issue for me is the change to the way the steering is calculated. Why have that progressive method (which was implemented really badly) where turn more than 10 degrees and the car slides. You can't use a keyboard to race anymore as the cars are impossible to control. For instance I can just jump into GRID or DiRT 2 and race with keyboard or any other controller, yet with SHIFT I can't? Makes no sense considering it's arcade background from NFS to Undercover.

The common response being go get a wheel. Fine I don't have the cash to get a wheel so EA doesn't get my cash for the game.

Keep sim's in sim games and arcade fun in arcade fun games. NFS is NOT sim...

I always wondered why I got thrashed so bad when playing online (using G25). Then I got it on xbox and found out.

Went back to the PC version last night with my 360 controller, was smashing laps and online races so much easier. Not a wheel-friendly game.

Dunno about DLC, I got the Ferrari pack on xbox and it was extremely meh. Still is the best look racer though.

there are a few mods about that make this game almost enjoyable. Sharp mod is the best of these
Includes Matt2380 brakes mod.
* This mod changes completely FFB. It removes the famous steering lag feeling, adds a firm steering when the wheel is centered (before was too light).
* This mod replaces all racing tyres in NFSS. *Not drifting tyres*
* It greatly reduces car left/right oscillations. Car feels more connected to the road.
* It makes steering far more direct and precise, mostly removing the feeling there is a controller lag.
* You need to be more precise and careful to be fast.
* reduces differential pre-load
* Reduces brake pressure as default stock brakes were already far too strong. Now you can feel difference between cold and hot brakes, and brake upgrades are more useful.
* Change default controllers setup for a better FFB
* adds friction/damper in FFB for a better feeling in center, which can be adjusted with your controller parameters in windows.
* Default springs are stiffer on most road cars.
* Turbo upgrades reduced to avoid undrivable works cars
* Tyre upgrades disabled as they ruin the handling
* Some disturbing additional FFB forces are removed
* Gear Shift lag is removed (thanks again Matt !)
* Wheel signal is boosted to make steering more direct. Huge change in feeling.

NFS Shift

Unread postby inz » 5 Aug 12, 9:31 pm

I thought I'd necro this thread because I just crawled out of my cave for some cake and decided to install this "gem"

Righto, I've done this before - all driver aids off.

**** me. I've played some difficult racing games, sims, whatever. Never have I played a game this retardedly temperamental. I've played with all the settings, adjusted my inputs etc. Modified my driving style, tuned my "ride," adjusted the in game settings, prayed to my car god, sworn at my television, etc etc.

It's just ridiculous. I love the style, I love the immersion, i especially love the NOISE... But if I plug my G27 in sometime this week and still can't steer this stupid thing then that's it, I'm sorry EA. I'm really trying to like this game... But **** you and your stupid game.

Put it this way, if I can take the corkscrew at full throttle in a strung out Supra or NSX in GT5 - why can't I tackle some close quarters racing around Ebisu in an S2K... Small rwd coupe, modest power, tight course, should be run right?

It's almost as though the game was built on a rallycross engine, and then at the last minute someone changed the graphics and added some bitumen in place of all the mud puddles I seem to keep sliding through.

And the AI keeps breaking lines like it's 3am and everyone in the taxi wants a kebab. Navigating your way through a peloton down the back straight on any number of racetracks can be fun. Sliding across the grass as you take the outside line only to be shunted off the track by the mindless AI competitors.
