Moving to Adelade... We hope.

Looking to move to adelaide for a bit of a change.
Myself + Wife + 3 year old daughter.
Currently in rural NSW.. work is a bit iffy here and my wife wants to move to a city.. Have managed to talk her out of Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra were never an option.
So adelaide is looking interesting...
Will be finding a job over there before we move.. But first, a few questions.

What are the best areas 20-30min outside of centeral adelaide?
What are the top 10 suburbs for internet speed ?
What is the best school district for public education ? Idealy an area with pre-school, primary school, highschool.
Weekend activities for a 3-4 year old in the area ?
What are pre-school prices like over there per day/week (without gov assistance) ?
What are petrol prices like right now ?
What is construction industry like over there right now ? Any big jobs coming up ? Who has the contracts ? What plant operators are most in demand ?

Any inteligent help and opinions welcome... 10-26 year old single children feel free to think you comments to yourself and move on.

Well I'll answer what I can at least, IMO:

- North Adelaide, Prospect, St Peters, Unley, Norwood are great areas <10 minutes from the city. (Suburbia is literally a short walk from the city in every direction, and not that expensive. I'm living in North Adelaide on a government student allowance...)
- Well here in North Adelaide literally the furthest you can get away from the Internode/Adam/etc exchange is around 800m. I have mates in Prospect who get great internet speed as well. You might have to get on that ADSL2exchange website though.
- Not too sure about this one
- Or this one lol, if you're near the city though there are lots of parks and playgrounds all over the place, the aquatics centre would be a blast, I dunno, the usual. I can almost guarantee that anything you'd want to do with a 4 year old anywhere else, you could also do here.
- No idea
- Petrol is as cheap as its been for years at the moment, past 12 months has fluctuated between 1.28-1.55 or so, with an average of around 1.35.
- I actually have a rough idea of this from footy mates in the construction business. What I've been hearing is that the past couple of months have quietened up a bit because people are being a bit more careful with their cash for the time being. They're anticipating things to pick up a bit soon but yeah, I'm probably not the best source of info.

- Just read your last comment, insulted

Considering your wife and kid, you'll want at a 3 bedroom house. 2 bed, possibly and office in the third?

East of the city you're looking at the upper class suburbs, you'll see prices for 3 bedroom homes from around $400 per week and up. West, North and South are cheaper and all around the same if you're looking at city fringe suburbs.

You'll probably find nicer places for value around Colonel Light Gardens, Mitcham, Clovelly Park. The first 2 being a bit greener, Clovelly Park is lacking in trees. For perspective, I lived in Colonel Light Gardens in a 2 bedroom unit for $285 per week. I now live in Brompton in a 2 bedroom 2 storey townhouse at $330 a week.

If you're looking at selling your current house and buying, there's a lot of land and housing development far south as Aldinga. But also up North as well.

What are the top 10 suburbs for internet speed ?

Avoid Mawson Lakes and Morphett Vale from experience. Their speeds can get horrendous, but Morphett Vale depends on which side of the river you're on too.
CLG that I recommended is on one of the larger exchanges, but also the speeds are around 16mbit on average. You'll find more info on http://www.adsl2exchanges.com.au

What is the best school district for public education ? Idealy an area with pre-school, primary school, highschool.

I'm biased to Private as I worked at a private school, but it's expensive, has a waiting list. But some private schools are all in one shop like the one I worked at. As I said, CLG's has a lot of schools scattered throughout with both pre, primary and high schools close by.

Weekend activities for a 3-4 year old in the area ?
Zoo, parks, beaches, playgrounds, there's a lot of them around. Just have to look for them. Sports are all over the place too.

What are pre-school prices like over there per day/week (without gov assistance) ?

Unsure, you'd have to ask someone with kids.

What are petrol prices like right now ?
Better than they have been if you fill up on a cheap day.

What is construction industry like over there right now ? Any big jobs coming up ? Who has the contracts ? What plant operators are most in demand ?

Housing construction is taking place with house and land packages to the far south and far north of the city. A commute from either of these places with peak hour is 45-60 minutes.

Bigger jobs are all over the place, there's been a push for a lot of development. The new hospital is being built, plenty of roadworks going on with the South Road Expressway being built and a lot of roads being upgraded.

What trade do you have under your belt already? or your current work?

There is a river in Morphett Vale?

You aren't wrong about Internet speed though, esp if you are near to the Reynella AM tower.

western suburbs are great. bowden, welland, croydon, hindmarsh... the "charles sturt" area. its where i live. close to everything, a fair number of parks for the kids, good commute times to anywhere as its pretty central, i have good net speeds, plenty of shops around... good primary schools... and public highschool wise... im not sure as i went "down south" fo my highschooling

workwise- what sort of trade do you have? im in the window and door manufacturing side of building. we have a timber joinery and also make alum wndows and doors too.
most of the builders i have been speaking to have said its been quiet over the last few .. months.
however some people are absolutly flat out with work. It was a slow 2 last months for us but we have noticed a real pick up back to "normal" levels over the last few weeks; but as i was saying in a previous post somehwere there are a few people going under.. i heard wallspan has now gone broke too.
one of our timber suppliers said last month was his quietest in 37 years. and ive spoken to a builder in his 70's who said he hasnt seen it this quiet since the 1970s.
im much more positive. i think it was a brief lull, and things will continue to strengthen. not everyone invests in shares. things need building.

if you are willing to work you'd find a job. and i wouldnt dream of moving interstate. adelaide has it all with less travel time. i like visiting sydney and melbourne, but thats not for me.

definitly avoid mawson lakes. rabbit warren lego block housing with mosquitoes.

Depending on where you live in Morphett Vale as it is one of the biggest suburbs in S.A. Saying that Im sitting comfortably at 15MB on the Lonsdale exchange (in morphett Vale) renting a 3 bedroom house for $280 a week.
The closer you get to the radio tower is Reynella exchange territory so stay in the southern parts and you're fine.

Just generic construction atm, labouring/traffic control, however am presented with oportunity to snag a HR/HC and plant ticket or two this year so was wondering what was in demand down that way, working my way through drafting course and prehaps heading towards a civ engineering degree if life/money/time allow ;)
Innitally renting, 2 year minimum while wife finnishes her degree then be looking to buy.

Definitely avoid Mawson Lakes. I managed to make the mistake of moving in there myself. Now I'm stuck with DSL1 or Wireless Broadband.

The extremities (north and south) have lower house prices, higher reported crime rates and lousy public transport (worse than the carp public transport in the inner metro area)

That doesn't mean they are bad places to live.

Perhaps have a look on a real estate website and see what your intended payable rent would get you? You could look at the myschool website for info.

you'll find a lot of the members here are actually from Adelaide, but are either under the age you require information from, or not have kids, or even under 26, with kids, but not married  Most members here are quite mature, even if they are under 26. ;)
